If you mean 3rd generation, then insist on maintanence records. And even reciepts for things like oil changes. I remember more than a few that came into the shop and had been running synthetic motor oil.

I was selling Mazda's when these came out, and many people weren't ready for a Mazda that needed sports car maintanence.

Also, many were crumpled up, salvaged, and re-sold. We even had a salesman ruin one for us. Moron snap spun it in the rain.

Just be careful and check it's records. There was at least one recall for the fuel system. Some caught fire.

Try to get any that you are really interested in to a dealership and spend an hour or so labor to get it checked out. If you are near Dallas, take it to Rotary Performance.

Hope I helped.

Check out the home of the 3rd generation on-line. It's at http://www.k-rad.com/. I think that they have a buyer's guide available, at least links to one.

Gambit,
here are some things to look out for when purchasing a 3rd Gen RX7.

1)Obviously check for maintenance records to see that the car was taken cared for and recieved all scheduled oil changes. This is important since a rotary motor must burn some oil to stay alive.

2)When the motor is cold(hasnt been started in atleast 8 hours) check and see if white or blue smoke is coming out the exhaust during startup. White smoke during cold startup suggests that the car has bad coolant seals. Remedy: esentially new engine.
Blue smoke means rotor housing warped or apex seals may not have proper compression or apex seals may be bad. Remedy: rebuilt or new engine.
3) Ask if all recalls were performed on the vehicle. To name a few, 93-95 RX7s were recalled for some seatbelt failure, driver side door cockpit compression problems, passenger side door handle issues, Paint chipping on front bumper cover, hood, etc.

These are some things you can look out for. As for distinguishing the 3rd Gen. RX7's, heres some insight.

93 RX7 came in 3 trim models.
1) Base- leather an option. no sunroof. Cruise an option. no rear wing or front chin spoiler. Next to R1, light and stiff.
2)R1 package. Standard Suede leather seats, no Bose stereo package available. Lighter curb weight, stiffer springs. Standard rear spoiler and front chin spoiler. Competition Yellow Mica color offered as an option for 1993 only. Sunroof not an option.
3) Touring pckg. standard sunroof, front fog lights, sound deading material, curb wieght roughly 2900 lbs., standard Bose stereo with CD player, The more GT minded car of the bunch.

94-95
1)base- same as above
2)R2- pretty much same as R1
3)PEP- Popular Equipment Package, pretty much same as Touring models.

Hope this helps.
Also, if the RX7 he is looking at is on its second engine, this shouldnt scare him/her as long as the rebuild or new engine was installed by a professional. Any further questions can be forwarded to: Rotorary7@aol.com
