I go to log into my hotmail account ( imprezive@hotmail.com ) and it says since you are under 13 ( not true ) do you have a parent present I say yes, then it says under new minor privacy act you must prove that there is a parent present by giving a credit card number nothing will be charged (whatever) I have my own credit card (well it is a check card, but I'm sure not gonna give out my number. so I deleted my account ( I couldn't accses it anyways ) so my new address is sube_surfer@hotmail.com pretty gay huh? the only imprezive name they had available is imprezive71 and higher. The what really ticks me off is I had e-mails I was saving

Not only is that BS, it is illegal. Report Hotmail to your bank. It is illegal to use a credit card as proof of age, just like it is illegal to require a social security number for identification in some cases. Sure, reporting Microsoft won't do much, but if enough people report it something will happen...eventually.

Hey guys. This is becoming more and more of a problem. There was a law passed requiring sites to verify that children under 13 get their parents' permission to enter information about themselves into a website. This was the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ("COPPA").

So, sorry this is not BS, it's law. Check out http://www.PIGuard.com for more information.

PIGuard is a product that will make it much easier for children to use websites--it allows their parents to predefine the sites the kids are allowed to enter information into. The product will be out soon.

Later,
Jeff

Yup, got rid of my hotmail account because of that. I usually use www.MyOwnEmail.com accounts personally (got around 5).

I have just created a new e-mail service. feel free to use it (or not!)

It is at http://imprezars.zzn.com

I have been using zzn mail for a few years now, and I have never heard of them killing an e-mail address or asking for a credit card number.

Have fun and enjoy!

Frey - I realize it's the law to protect minors, however it's illegal to use a credit card as validation. Anyone can get a credit card. My cat has a credit card. And he's only 6. But seriously, I've gone through the laws regarding age verification because of a...uhm...Web site I used to run.

Alternate forms of identification must be used to be binding. Credit card numbers only prove you have a credit card. A signed letter must be faxed or mailed to be legal.

Question

how do you "delete" a hotmail account?
I've got one that somehow got on one spam list and they multiplied like rabbits. 50 messages a day. i don't have time to sort through them anymore so its pretty useless.

thx

Sean - I wasn't arguing about the credit card thing. I was just stating that websites must verify age now and get parents' permission when necessary. So, we all need to get used to "proving" that we're of age.

I myself would never put a credit card number into a site to verify my age, illegal or not. And I NEVER use my check card number on the internet--that gives the people direct access to my checking account.

Question

Hey Sean, if having to give out your credit card number for age verification is illegal, then 80+% of the porn sites would have to be shut down as well. As far as anyone being able to obtain a credit card, I believe all of mine have required me to agree that I am over the age of 18. I could lie, if necessary, but then I would be breaking the law.

Like it or not, surfing the net anonymously will never happen. We will be tracking, monitored, and our info will be sold for profit. That's just the way it is.

Yeah, that's funny. When Microshaft bought out Hotmail, it was based on a UNIX system. Microshaft didn't want that so they tried to run it with Windows NT and it failed in a big way. So guess what? They re-installed BSD. HA! HA!

Microshaft, taking over the world, one upgrade at a time.

Cool

D00m3d - Yup...and the 80% of porn sites that require a credit card for free access are breaking the law. But, being unenforcable, no one bothers to do anything. And yes, my cat did lie when he filled out the credit card application, so I guess he'll be going to jail if caught.
