Cool Just got my RS - First Impressions (long)

Well I just picked up my MY01 Blue Ridge Pearl Coupe yesterday. Got it with factory leather, Upgraded Sound, and Upgraded Security from Flatirons Subaru in Boulder,CO.

I started off with a measly drive back to work just trying to take it easy, but found myself diving in and out of corners. This car has a great suspension, but I can tell that it needs a little work. A lot of what I was feeling could have been solely on the Bridgestone tires on the car that I'm not too impressed with.

Exterior - This is one great looking car..and damn that color is awesome. Really like the fin and the front end is just badass.

Interior - Really like the factory leather seats. With the red pin striping, they go real well with the leather steering wheel and shiftboot. Also liked the carbon fiber dash much more than I thought I would. I sat in a MY00 just after and it kind of looked bland.
Not much storage room though. Not quite sure where to put my garage door opener.

Initial Problems - It was just getting dark and I turned on my lights to show my girlfriend how awesome the fog lights were...and they DIDN'T WORK. the light on the switch didn't even go on. I then realized that the cruise wasn't working either. Well I couldn't wait to get back to the dealer to bitch...so I started taking the dash apart and found that they plugs weren't even plugged into the fog and cruise switches. So i plugged them in...and they worked. Woo hoo. I then also noticed that there was another set of plugs that weren't connected. They were light green connecters and were hanging as if they should be connected...so i connected them. When I started the car the check engine light went on...so i disconnected it. Any idea what this green connecter is for?
*Also, my door doesn't seem to shut unless you really slam it. Anyone else have this problem
*Why the hell doesn't my back seat go down?
*Is it me or do the windows take over 30 seconds to go up and down? and they don't seem to go down all of the way? About 1/2 inch is sticking up when all the way down. More so on the passenger side?
*Why does the sunroof stop halfway when you are closing it? How annoying!

Well, all in all I absolutely love this car and won't let the above mentioned items allow me to dislike it. It's beautiful, there are hardly any around, It's fun to drive...and that's all that really matters to me.

First Mods - Tinted windows, short shift kit, air intake, rear sway bar.

Sorry so long,
Newbie Stacey

Yay!! I'm pretty new too and I love mine.
I had the door problem too. Have your dealer's body shop align it. Mine now closes flush and almost always on first shut.
I like the fact the sunroof stops in the middle 'cause I don't always want it open all the way. I can see how it's be annoying tho.
I don't think my windows are real slow, and they go down all the way. Then again, this is my first car w/ power windows so any power window is fast to me.
I have 2600 miles and I have an air intake and exhaust, tint, a European plate, some cool decals, and a window banner. My STi bumper spoiler is on its way.
Pics coming soon.
Enjoy the car!! Welcome to the club!!
PS Mine's BRP too

the green switched you pluged in is for the technician to do diagnostics with...i think. that sucks that your fogs and cruise wasn't hooked up...hell while you had it apart you should have done the fog light mod.

Back seat doesn't fold. Sorry, you should have asked before buying. If you need to carry something long you'll need a roof or rear bumper rack, or a trailer.

Windows do roll down slowly compared to most cars.

Sunroof has a stop for safety. Stupid but true...

And the stock tires suck. Badly.

rpone605,
I totally should have done the fog light mod. I even had the instructions printed in my briefcase upstairs. I guess I was just so excited to even see the fogs on. Didn't really care about the cruise...but it kind of makes me wonder why these weren't plugged in at the factory...and why the dealer didn't find it in thier PDI.

My door didn't really clse well at first, but it broke in after awhile. I just always figured that it was the rubber sealing. The windows are r-e-a-l-l-y slow. You might want to have the dealer check out your windows though if they aren't going all the way down..mine do. I asked the people at my dealer about the sunroof, and he gave me this explaination: Some people *cough*Subie Chick*cough* don't like it all the way open, so it stops about halfway when your closing it. I find it real annoying. On the storage space, get the center armrest/storage thing. I got one, and then took the top off of it. It gives me enough room to put my garage door opener in it, and raises my elbow to a comfortable level.

If it hasn't been done yet, Welcome to the club!

Edit: Damn, I'm a slow typer...three posts in the time it took me to type mine...

Impeza Rider,
I tried the armrest thing in another car and although I really liked the additional storage, it was much to high for my arm to rest on. the stock center console is at a perfect height for my arm to rest with the manual transmission.
As far as the windows, thanks everyone for your feedback. I'll have the dealer check mine out.

I dont have an Impreza but I read on this board before that the reason the windows move so slow is because there is a piece that holds the window and it is screwed too tight. If you loosen it a little the window works better. I found this in the technical part of the board

Fixes and answers:

1) Shutting the door without the sunroof clicked open or a window open will require more effort. The Scooby's are pretty damn airtight. Try it again with the sunroof clicked open a bit. If it is still a pain, have the dealer check it.

2) The backseat has always been a bone of contention for the Impreza RS's. Something to do with safety features. I'm currently looking for the post about getting an older set of seats that can be installed to replace the stock seats that do fold down. Just can't seem to find it....

3) Windows should go down all the way. The reason that they take sooo long is that the guide rollers are tight. To fix this, roll (or power) down the window about 3 inches and open and close the door like 20 times not so gently. This will cause the window to push against the rollers and loosen them up. This is also a fix for a slow passenger window going up.

4) This is a safety feature. I hate it myself but it does make sense. Same reason there is no auto up for the windows.

5ish) Sucked that your fogs and cruise didn't work. Unacceptable.

I would recommend getting the rear sway bar AFTER you drive the car a while (say break in period). If you are an everyday driver (ie not a rally runner), I would recommend the 18mm bar. Don't forget to add tires to your mod list. Garage door opener may fit well in the drawer by the fuses.

There's a box of fuses in the engine room and one behind the change door by the foglight switch.

It's easy to get the rear seats to fold down. Just remove all the bolts holding it in, toss the rubber & carpet insulating blankets, remove the corrugated cardboard liner and ziptie it to the backrest, and you're set.

It appears that the RS has 2 fuse panels. One is behind the coin tray underneith the fog and cruise swithes. The other is under the hood. Not quite sure why there are 2.
Could be that the more frequently blown fuses are in the car for easier swaping, however my coin tray indicates that the fuse puller in located in the main fuse panel under the hood, so that would, well...just be stupid.

When was the last time you bought a new car? Two fuse panels have been standard on most cars for a number of years.

ColinL,
This is my 3rd new car in the last year.
I also have a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo and a 2000 VW Jetta. I guess I've never had to change a fuse to even determine where the fuse box(es) are.
And if my fog light and cruise were working when I got my car...I still woulnd't know.
Thanks for pointing that out. I'm interested to see if the Rodeo and Jetta have 2 as well.
