THSCC school & autox report 10/4-5/03

Tom Hoppe is a bastard... and so is Shawn Whipple (FTPAX).

Several Subaru guys got trophies, including Bill Martin (Odd Monkey), who really showed some improvement out there. Kevin Hoff did a great job with the course setup & weed whacking

Being an instructor was lots of fun, and I look forward to doing it again. It's cool spending some time with a student and seeing your teaching and encouragement make them go faster.

Did I mention STi's are REALLY FAST? Well, they are.

I love my new Digital Rebel - got lots of great action shots, and I'll be posting the Subaru stuff here shortly.

And once again, FREDS RS delivered under pressure, taking 1st in STS and 3rd overall - despite a certain (now fully-prepped) Celica driver's insistence that "Kevin's not going to know what hit him at Laurinburg."

PS - results are not yet up, but should be sometime today...

It's funny how I took 1st place in STS 5 out of the previous 6 events I ran with our club (the car broke the other time) but he just kept talking smack.

He's a great guy and a great driver, though, and running against him definitely challenges me to drive hard; if I slip up, he's going to be there to take the top spot. Once he gets the car sorted out, it could get pretty tough! Of course, the guy I'm always aiming for is Mr. Hoppe, so STS is usually a semi-distant 2nd priority.

Yeah, my car has about 50 cone marks on it. Some of them will come out, but some are permanent...

Wow.......you didn't knock that cone out of the box babe!
7th in street tire on some BALD and busted S03s! Wow, you were the first car in class not on azenis and you beat the other STI by 10 thousands.

Wow, I'm glad I didn't put you in novice class, you would have won by 4 seconds

Mr. Off was in a 20 year old Porsche 944 with 400 treadwear Michelins and 20-yr old shocks. Not a recipe for speed.

Everyone there will vouch that I had a blast though! RWD is fun.

(And I'm trying to learn to LFB. At least once I noticed that I had the throttle floored and the brake on about 1/4 in a straight. D'oh!)

Yeah, stupid cones, dang it!! If I hadn't coned my last run would have gotten 4th in TIR. I kept hitting the second to the last cone in the first slalom. Not to shabby for my second autocross. Midnight gold you have to come up to the next event for a rematch.

Not at all

If you got late entering that first slalom that was the cone you would have hit

What killed me were those 5 cone walls. You hit 1 cone and it takes 3 with it

It didn't help that the 5-cone wall slalom spacing was evil tight. It would have been _much_ better had Jim and I made the spacing just a few feet longer.

I think I have all of you beat - I went off course at the 2nd turnaround by going OUTSIDE of the OUTER CONE on my first run. Out in the dirt, about 50 feet from the actual pivot cone. Never even saw the inside cone (the one we were supposed to be tight on). That's what I get for only taking 2 course walks.

Very embarrassing, had Phil Fausz riding with me too, so I'll have to make it up to him Friday night.

Got late

I was having a little trouble with that braking point. Was I late turning in at the first cone in that slalom? Maybe I should have taken the class.

But who drove the yellow SRT-4 that is listed in the picture? They're not in the results. Looks like Tom did registration...miss a car there?

edit: I really just want to see if the SRT-4 is truly fastAr!

I understand. I don't think I was doing that. I kept hitting it with the right front tire, or just behind it, while cutting to the right. Maybe turning too soon. So much to learn.

Some pics are from the school/test&tune, and some are from the autox. The guy with the SRT4 was one of my students (obviously we switched off in the second session). He had never seen an autox course before, but did improve pretty well during the day. In a straight line, it felt almost like Tom's car.

Unfortunately, he didn't tell me to show him how to drive it.

The most fun I had with a student was with the MS Protege driver - really started pushing it towards the end of our session together. I could really tell he was having a blast!
