Lightbulb Um I'm new to this whole thing and I'm thinking about getting one . . .

I'm looking at a used 98 that a dealership is selling for 17K. Is there anything I should watch out for?

Okay now what about this MY98 vs. MY99 motor business, i don't want to get a dohc motor that's not as good as the sohc motor. I mean what are some good points about having the 98 motor. Oh yeah not to mention that I looked underneathe the hood of this car on the lot and the hood scoop wasn't active. Please people, fill me in before I make a decision.

your question is too vague man. no, none of the scoops are functional, but you can esily change that. The 98 motor has less torque than the 99, but the 98 has a MAP rather than the MAF found in 99's (from what i'm told), and that's a good thing. The price is a bit high, though

Price seems a bit high..

Kelly blue book quote $15800 retail for a 98 5 spd with 40000 miles on it

check http://www.kbb.com/kb/ki.dll/kw.kc.u...;r&40&3;SU;B1&

and you can feed in the details of the specific car

the 98 use a hot wire MAF whereas the 99 uses a hot film MAF.. Only the MY00 and later cars use map.

The hot wire is better if you wish to turbo the car

Question

for about less than a grand more you can get a leftover '00 or new 01 maybe a little over 18k ...but are you including tax and tags in that number?

there's a really good condition black '98 5-spd for sale here in NE Ohio. His price was reasonable too. I'm not sure if its still up or not. Its sold by xmetal. you might wanan PM him. the car is pristine. Cleaner than my car, and mine's only a few months old!

Okay the car I'm looking at is a red RS 2.5 with the 1998 Rally Chapionship badge on it. And this car only has 21,648 miles on it, which is pretty damn good if you think about used cars. And I think another reason why it might be so high is because I'm here in the Silicon Valley.

Get the red98, you won't be sorry as red is a pretty rare color (brilliant red was only available in '98 for the Impreza). As far as the dohc engine vs. the sohc engine, who cares. The guys at minnam racing told me that the mass air sensor on the '98 is the same as the WRX. Check out my ride, i've had it for 2 years now and I still go cruising.

Cool ScoobySport, Thanks for the input everyone.

As for the first test drive I noticed that when I attempted to drop the clutch, it didn't react well. It ouwld make a loud noise as if the transmission were stressing or something. I'm not sure if that sounds accurate but that's what it sounds like. Anyone got any ideas?

17k is way expensive for an MY98
for 2k more could get am imp thats faster (MY99 and up have have 4lbs of tq at peak and twice as much tq in lower rev range), looks better (fog light bumber) and handles bettern (MY00 and up have viscous limited rear diffrentila slip)

ok, ok, slight exaggeration on the twice as much part but the difference is signicant in the low end from what i've heard from someone else on the board

I assume when you say 17000k, the "k" means clicks or miles rather than kilometers. If that is the case, then I think the price is too high. Also, red does oxidize very easily(red becomes orange), so if the paint wasn't baby'd, then I would look elsewhere. just my opinion.
