Post I got toasted by a Caprice Classic!?!?

I was toodling along on my way to work today, and I stopped at a light. An old Chevy Caprice Classic pulls up next to me. The road ahead merges into one lane, so it's always a good place to do a short drag . I waited for the green light, and had no intention of racing, nor did the guy in the caprice rev his engine or creep up on the line or anything. So the light turns green and I start off, doing my usual start (quickish), and out of the damn blue the Caprice ZOOMS by me like I'm standing still...I was stunned. I was WALKED! Shortly after I realized that my RS quit accelerating- I had hit the rev limiter...That's how dumbfounded I was. But my saving grace is that I wasn't trying to race him (I really wasn't), but still. I have no idea how a caprice can accelerate so quickly...(one of my co-workers said maybe it was an old cop car with the juiced engine)

Just remember that before you all laugh at me, I wasn't trying to race him!

Oh, and on a side note my Salesperson told me off today...Why? I guess he was annoyed at me...Why? Because I was pointing out how badly he screwed up with me and my car. Why? Because he screwed up repeatedly

I was going to get my car from Fred Beans, but I didn't. Instead I got it from Coleman Subaru in Trenton. I'm beginning to think that this was a mistake. Did you know I can arm my alarm system with my door open? Yes, Arm. As in, if I press the lock button, it will lock and arm the system, and a few seconds later start blaring the siren

And yes, it was a Caprice Classic because I saw enough of it's tail end to read the lettering

There is a place up the road about 45 minutes from me that sells retired caprice classic cop cars. Some have bullet holes in the windshields and body (pretty cool, huh!) Anyhow, they have corvette engines in them. My neighbor who is a New York State Trooper verfified this. Thats why you got toasted!

Funny story about a Caprice.

At an autox and we had to move cars parked in one area of the pits. The guy driving a highly modified (HP) Caprice was working the event, so a friend of mine moved it for him. My friend drove a '95 s/c'd M3 at the time and had this big grin on his face after moving the Caprice. He said "It's like I had an extra seat beside me, I mean between me and the door!" They are one very large chunk of American steel!

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?

a friend in highschool had an early-mid 80's Malibu former cop car-- no doorhandles or window cranks in the back.

he put a fairly warmed over 350 in it and embarrased many a ponycar. had higher aspirations for it, but it was totaled by an uninsured, unlicensed driver. he didn't have collision so that's when the fun stopped.

The last generation of Caprice police cruisers had an LT1 in it, but it was NOT a "Corvette motor". The LT1 in the Caprice cruisers was the same as the LT1 in the regular Caprice sold to John Q. Public - 260hp. (The original, early 90s bubble-shaped Caprice only had about 200, maybe 210hp. I believe after the first year (maybe two years) of the Impalla SS, all of the Caprices got the same engine as the SS - the 260hp LT1. The Buick Roadmaster had the same engine. So, the early 90s cruisers may have been packing significantly more heat than the publicly-avaiable Caprice, but it still weren't no "Corvette motor".)

Oh, and same goes for the Mustang 5.0L cop cars - EXACT same drivetrain as a civilian 5.0L (except for blue silicone heater hoses and a different fan clutch). A police package car is actually SLOWER than a regular Mustang because of all the extra weight the police package carries around. So, I'm sure the ex-cop car 5.0 was fast, but not because it was anything special.

Yeah, the 260hp versions have a boatload of torque, so they really move off the line. Plus, unless I'm mistaken, the 0-60 times on those cars was in the 7 second range. Pretty hard to beat those monsters.

For fun, I was looking for a used 94-97 Impala SS & was really surprised to see some modded ones selling for over $30k!

Be very careful with former cop cars. Some of those bitches were turned up to 340hp. There were all kinds of special editions that packed a bigger punch than the Impala SS. The early 90s LTZ Special Pursuit Package made 293 hp through a TBI 305. Later cars made 340hp. Those things are mean.

Guys, being a long time Chevy fan I can tell you firsthand that the old Caprice that beat you probably had a "built" motor in it. It is no secret that you can build a really strong small-block Chevy for under 2 grand. My father has a 355 (350 bored .030 over) in a '77 4wd with 33" tires that has stomped many a Mustang and runs all over my 2000 RS. Don't be surprised when some old Chevy runs that good. Just because it's not new doesn't mean it won't run. And never, ever, unless you've got some serious horsepower, try to spank an old big-block Chevelle. Not tryin' to stir anything up, just tryin'to let you guys know what we're up against.

If it makes you feel any better, the car I'm currently driving, a '92 Olds Achieva SL v6 with auto could easily beat a stock RS... but the car handles like a pile of blubber on SUV wheels

I have to agree. The Blues Brothers is a good movie. Who's up for a 440 wedge swap in a Scooby? LMHO

According to the cop who was rapidly ferrying me downtown to look at a homocide lineup in San Antonio, TX (loooong story), I was riding in a super-limited edition LT5-powered pursuit cruiser. Droogs, I have NEVER crossed San Antonio so fast.

Don't get too down, the caprice couldn't handle the turns...

I used to have a '74 old 98 sedan. It had a 455 rocket engine and stock dual exhausts w/o catalitic converters. Fully loaded with 5 guys and camping gear for a week I could easily blow away almost any car off the line to 90mph on a straight.

But if I tried to turn, the car would continue straight as if I hadn't turned the wheels...
