Unhappy Help...car won't start

My GF '96 Legacy will not start. It's acting as if the battery is dead or the connections are corroded.
With a new battery and cleaned connectors it's still not getting enough electrical power to turn it over.

The dash lights and dome light are dim as if something is putting a load on the electrical system.

I also pulled the alternator and it tested fine.

I'm not sure what to test next

Seems like a bad starter is the probably cause. Not sure how you would verify it, though. Can you hear a click from the starter solenoid? Does it turn over at all?

The dash lights are dim to begin with...even with jumper cables hooked up.

As soon as you turn the ingnition...it sounds like it wants to move the starter for a fraction of a second but the power drains out.

Everything goes dead as soon as you turn the ignition to the starter position.

Try new cables? They may look fine externally but they may be corroded inside.

Default battery cables

The positive and negative cables. The one that goes to the starter and the one that goes near the starter. Also clean all connections.

A few days ago the car almost died while coming to a stop..the ABS light came on and the strereo turned off then back on again.

This is wierd since the alternator tested fine.

I'll check all the connections after work to see if it's loose or corroded.

Yeah, I agree with subster, check the actual battery cables a little closer. I had one freak incident where the terminal was clean, but there was a bad connection between the terminal and cable.

I'll check the wires closely later.

Is there anything else I should look at? The car is stuck 45 min away, so I'd like to check as many things as possible while I'm there.

I can't think of anything right at this moment. Just check and clean all of the connections and make sure they are connected tight. OH! Fuses! Check your fuse box! You might have a faulty or burnt fuse. I f you have time take out some fuses that have to do with the ignition system.

and examine them. Sometimes they look fine but are burnt out.

Default cables

try running a jumper cable from the positive on battery to starter, the cables might appear to be good and have continuity thru it but it cant move the amps it needs, if it starts right up you have a bad cable good luck and dont let out the factory smoke

Finally went to look at the car over the weekend.

First thing I did was take apart the positive connector to see if it was corroded. From the exterior it looked fine, but when I opened the metal that holds the wires in....holy crap. There was not a single piece of exposed metal....everything was covered with a green flaky solid.

As soon as I cleaned it off with some sand paper, the car got enough power to start.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Time to replace both of those bad boys. It's amazing how much corrosion can accumulate inside those wire sheaths. You'll also want to check the lug/connectors at the starter motor itself. They are a "known" corrosion/incidence/failure piece. Check this starting problem link and this starter problem link for references.

I was having a bunch of weird things happening to my car. ABS warning lights, headlights dimming with the use of the brake pedal, irregular starting problems, etc.

My positive terminal was corroded as well. I didn't think it was the problem as I had cleaned it about 3 weeks previously. I must have some leaking from the battery post and will be replacing it soon.

BTW, pour a can of coke on the corrosion powder and it will be gone in seconds. Just have something underneath like a glass bowl to catch everything before it gets further down into your engine compartment.

Default Two websites:

http://www.startercontacts.com/

and

http://home.austin.rr.com/samuraistarter/Clicky2.htm

I got new contacts and a new plunger from the first guy.
His name's Larry. Nice guy.
He told me to also check out the second website.
That guys name is David and I just got HIS product today and will install it tomorrow.

Either way pass these two websites along to EVERY Suby owner you know.

The first or second website might save you or some one you know a lot of trouble and money.

These are both regarding the dreaded "Clicky Starter".
Congradulations Maciek!
Hope this helps if you don't already have it figured out!
