Unfortunately only the legislature can repeal the car tax. With an $8B deficit, I don't think they'll want to add another $5B to that.

the sad thing is not that Arnold won...but that Arnold was the best cannidate...that is the sad part.

I sure as hell wanted the feck up davis out and I sure as hell didn't want the mafia front dope cruz.

At least arnold has a kennedy in his bed.

all I know is that 4x's registration is bull shevick....I just bought a brand new car...that's gonna kill me....I mean...double it..yeah that's still gonna hurt but not kill me....you will still make twice as much money as you did last year....just plane rediculous. Davis was trying to cover his poorly handled financial ass.

I wanted Davis out as much as anyone, but you need to understand that Davis did not enact the 3x car tax. When the VLF (Vehicle License Fee, aka car tax) was reduced 2/3 by legislative action several years ago, there was a provision within that action. That provision stated that if the state ever fell into a deficit situation, the VLF rebate program would automatically end and fees would return to their previous levels. Davis did not re-increase the tax, and Arnold cannot repeal it. As I said before, that's $5B for a state that already has an $8B deficit.

If you look at your registration from last year you'll see the fees broken down and at the very bottom there is a "VLF offset". This is/was your rebate. The VLF technically did not go up at all, we just don't get our rebate anymore. No matter how you look at it though, we are getting screwed. I got my reg fees for my 2001 Explorer Sporttrac last month (it isn't due until November) and they were $450, up quite a bit from last year. I can't wait to see the fees for the Rex in February. At least the VLF is tax deductable.

Mike: I think that an executive order can take the car tax out, because an executive order put it in, not the legislature..I think right?

Have any of you seen the movie "Distinguished Gentlemen"? This is the same thing..kind of funny really.

The only way we could make our state look worse is by trying to do another recall. That would be out of hand.

No, the legislature put the VLF offset into effect in 1998 (IIRC), along with the deficit caveat. The only way we can easily get rid of it for good is to put it on the next ballot as a measure or get a constitutional amendment (Tom McClintock has been trying to do both).

It was really nice to have the rebate during the good times. It was like getting a bonus from your company for it having a good year. But now that times are tough for the state it can really use that extra $5B. My company's revenue is down over 50% this year - I know I'm not expecting any bonuses. You have to ask yourself, where is the state going to get another $5B from if not from the VLF and/or which services would you like cut?

My concerns with California are:

Cost of living: up
Taxes: up ($600 to register my car?!?! That's outrageous)
Gas prices: HIGH (finally decreasing a bit though)

Jobs: Down
Pay: Down

I just wish the legislature would get money to cover their overspending out of their parkets only, not mine. We keep paying more money and getting less and less services. Or we could ammend the constitution of the state to allow us to carry a deficit over a few years. Doing so would reduce the immediate need for all these cuts and could save a lot of jobs and services, while keeping already too high taxes down.

And if Kalifornia didn't drive businesses away there would be a lot more jobs here. It's a viscious cycle and just about everyone is losing. But is it really better anywhere else in the US? I've been contemplating moving out of the state, but everywhere I look I find other problems. While my car may be cheaper in State X, my property taxes will be higher, or my income tax will be higher, or... or it will just be a crappy place to live. I keep searching, but I can't seem to find a better solution. Maybe it's time to move to Canada.

Here's a little info on where some of the VLF goes:
http://www.csac.counties.org/legisla...2X/trigger.pdf

If you want to find out more, just do a search on Google for "california vlf" or "california car tax". It makes for some interesting reading.

I've been considering moving out of state as well. The main benefit I see there is that one could actually make a living on minimum wage - and $12/hr would be more than enough to cover ones expenses.

Additionally, land value is SO low in many states such as Texas, Ohio or even Nevada and if you already own a home in CA, the equity you have in it could help you to buy an awesome house for much less per month than you are currently paying.

The hard part is that I can't think of anywhere else in the country that I would rather live that offers all the things California does. Especially in Sac where we're so close to everything - the ocean, the mountains, big cities, etc.

It's a hard decision, and I doubt we'll move, but it's definitely on our minds.

My sentiments exactly.

Although I did like Austin, TX when I was there (except for the humidity). I love Vegas, but I don't really want to live in a desert. It rains too damn much in Seattle and Portland. New Mexico might be nice. The Rex would be too slow in Colorado... See what I mean?
