Default Rallispec RA Gearset / Exedy Flywheel

Gearset alone, installed at Northtown Subaru into stock box.

OMG, this is the gearset subaru should have installed to begin with.... every gearratio is absolutely perfect, no longer is that annoying 1-2 shift there. It feels like im driving a totally different beast, and is the single best upgrade (other than tires) i have done on my car since the day I bought it. The gearbox also feels alot tighter, but goes into every gear perfect, even first on a roll.

Im using Mobil 1 75w-90 Gear oil, as Rallispec Recommended.

The only big downfall is that at 75mph in 5th gear, its running about 3550 (approx) RPM.... def not a highway mileage car anymore. (as if it ever was). The 4-5 Shift happens around 100mph. I think the best way to describe it is a 6 speed transmission without 6th gear.

The flywheel feels great, no chatter in the morning yet, revs drop and rise quickly and smoothly, the only thing hard getting used to, is giving it a bit more throttle to get it moving. Ive stalled it a number of times already. It also gets worse as it gets warmed up.

What clutch kit are you using? Also, how is gear noise and decel noise now compared to stock tranny/flywheel?

Thanks

What was your total cost and downtime for the gearset?

EDIT: Can you please list your speeds at 4000rpm and 6000rpm in each gear, along with your tire size (if not 205/55/16)????? Don't kill yourself on that last gear. I'm mostly curious about 1st through 4th.

Thanks for the review. Keep the updates flowin`

BUMP.

I did my own research. My tires are bald Falken Azenis running low (34psi) pressure, 205/55/16 on stock wheels.

Mods are canister exhaust, stock gearbox with no mods.
I don't think the exhaust would affect these numbers:

2003 WRX Speeds

1st Gear
4000rpm = 21mph
6000rpm = 31mph

2nd Gear
4000rpm = 37mph
6000rpm = 51mph

3rd Gear
4000rpm = 52mph
6000rpm = 79mph

4th Gear
4000rpm = 75mph

Sorry, I can't safely go any faster until I get out of town. Can anyone test out these numbers on stock tires at stock pressure to verify??

bullseye17 - get back to us with those #'s !! :-)

ty,

How much did the RA gearset costs? And where did you purchase it?

I'm guessing it came from Rallispec?

I brought my car to the track and I am going through the traps at 110 at the very end of fourth gear. I think I paid like 1500 about a year ago for mine. Gruppe-S has them pretty cheap now.

Okay. I know the gearing between the GC 2.5RS and the new WRX are obviously different, but...

...a ~3500 rpm at 75mph sounds pretty normal, to me. My car runs about the same with a stock transmission.

I don't know if the RA set in my car would be that drastically different or not, but right now it seems I wouldn't lose out on highway gas mileage at all, really.

Hell my '94 Acura Integra RS ran at about 4300+ rpm at 73mph.
The Impreza may as well be a Lexus.

I am running the stock gear box on my car but I am curious to know if the RA set will hold up the power of my mods.

18 G fp turbo
PE 650cc injectors
Walbro fuel pum
Borla headers
sti scoop
tmic from Turbo Xs
Gredy cat back
hks Down pipe
tmic gt Spec spliter
CAI intake
Utec computer
Lineage grounding kit

I need your opinions, I am looking for a good reliable and strong gearbox fix for a daily driver WRX. Thanks

I'm not positive, but the starter of this thread's profile says he drives a '97 Outback, and again I could be wrong, but I think most older Subaru 5 speeds come with a 4.10 final drive, as opposed to our 3.9, so that is probably why he has to shift to 5th around 100mph, ours should be a little higher than that.
