Default Need some help from the CALI people

Recently I have lost my job and My Girlfriend and I have split up.
(no big loss from either)

I was born and raised in MI and currently live here. As I have always dreamed, I am considering moving out to California. I have gone through schooling and a few years of work in the film industry and I think now is the best time for me to take the next step.

This is still just in the planning stages but I need to start doing some research.

Ideally I would like to be near the heart of the film industry (Hollywood). So I am thinking Los Ang. or so.

Has anyone ever just packed up where you live and moved out to Cali?

Is anyone looking for a roomate or how hard would it be to find one?

How hard would it be to find ANY kind of full time job to get myselt situated hopefully prior to actually leaving Michigan?

Well, I could use any help you can offer.
Thanks!

edit: I do not expect to jump right into big time film making, I know how the field works. I am only 21 and I need to get myself out there and I think now is my best chance.

Goddamn. California is not the promised land! Stay home!

God, this state is being inundated with midwesterners and easterners driving up the costs of everything (supply and demand), traffic is a bitch, and the roads are already tore up.

Instead of running away from your problems, why don't you deal with them where you are and spare us the gridlock!

And yes, I am a native, before anyone asks.

but seriously, so cali is not all it's cracked up too be, if you don't mind the smog, traffic, "can't give u time of day" attitude, "hurry up and get out of my way" kinda thing, then come on aboard.

another thing, we have major smog law, hope u don't like modding cars, or at least can find time to put it back to stock if u get a tix or smogging it

w/that being said

we are the center of the universe, and no, that wasn't self absorb, hehe

Why doesn't everyone from Michigan just come out here. I've been here a month and love it. I'm here for modeling and acting and am trying to meet as many people in the industry as I can. I think I'm going to be signing with a pretty good modeling agency next week. I was lucky and had a place waiting here for me with my sister in the valley. I think it took sherif a month or two to find a good roommate and place to live. But this is wierd that another metro Detroiter wants to come out here. Good luck!

Thanks Wes.

I think I met Sheriff once or twice here at the local meets.

My car is stock.

Who said anything about me running away from my problems? I simply was stating that now was a good time for me to move. So that was the most ignorant answer I think I have ever read.

If you hate CALI you move here and I will move there. I hate winter here and there are little to no jobs in my industry.

Anyone else care to give me some advice?

I don't hate it, rather I love it.

Even more if you other people would stay home.

Don't move to Hollywood, unless you like living around a bunch of transvestites. No joke.

actually the film indusrty is starting to pick up a little lately. I work over at Disney and let me tell you a lot of it is who you know. Most likely you will be moving into a lowly grunt job if you get in. A good foot in the door job is the vaults of some companys. Hollywood is your best area to look for jobs. The post houses are a little easier to get into than WB, Universal and Disney. Oddly enough most people leave the big companys for some of the post houses. its got trade offs. Studios pay poor unless you get union gigs. post houses have a higher layoff rate and most smaller places get gobbled up by Liberty Media. The shows are filming again so jobs are there. Have you thought about Canada??? Its closer to ya and cold still. LOL showbizjobs.com, tvjobs.com, settico.com/jobs/ they might be some help to see whats out there. Disney is hiring a Tape Operator soon when they get the spot approved but they want people with experience

Like I mentioned, I have experience.

I have been working in the field for around 3 years now.

Do you think you could give me a heads up when the job opens? What are the odds of finding a full-time job with benefits? Or do most people consider themselves free-lancers?

if you can beat box, Disney's California Adventure is currently auditioning "Vocal Percussionists". $21.50/hr union job. not too bad.

I could do beat box lol

So Cal has a number of openings, showbizjobs.com really helped me out.

I think my high points (and love) are in post production. I sent my resume out to a few companies in So Cal today for editor positions.

I really think I am going to do this. If I cannot score a job now, I may wait until after the holidays.

edit: This IS what I want to do... but damn I am going to miss 93-94 octaine gas and $1.50/gal prices

Hey man, I've been non-homeless for a week and I love it here. In all reality, if you're used to living in Detroit and dealing with the hustle on 94 and 696, the people & the attitude, you'll have zero problems living here. Things aren't that dissimilar in all reality. There are plenty of places to live, its just a matter of finding one within your means and in the location you are looking for. My honest opinion and what I did, I came out here a month before I actually moved and scouted the areas (if you want a guide drop me a line ), found which areas I really liked, and then picked up and just moved a month later, drove cross country and everything. It was one of the better moves I've ever done! If you have any questions drop me a line! Good luck mang

I have met quite a few people that have come and gone, attempting to break into the business. For some reason a lot of people have misconceptions about LA and Hollywood. My gf new a girl that was trying to make in the music industry, and she ended up sleeping with this butt ugly producer guy(damn that's sad). She ended up moving back home to frisco, but damn, she was talented. Another guy I knew ended up doing a porno to make ends meet. He ended up working a minimum wage job for a bit, but it wasn't modeling or acting, so he moved back to Chicago. They thought it would be easy to pick up and move here and jump into the entertainment business, like jobs in the industry are growing on trees or something.
That's not saying you can't make it, but just don't get discouraged too quickly if things don't fall the right way. Good luck man...

Thanks.

I am hoping if I make the right decisions and plan right I wont end up the typical "statistic" of young people who want to get into the biz.

Hey Dude,
I don't want to sound discouraging, but when we LA natives go out to dinner, or to a club/bar, we try to count how many bartenders/waiters have some kind of degree and are here to "make it". My most recent amusement was when i went to maggiano's at the grove and found that a waitor there went to Brown university, studied computer engineering, and was in LA to become an actor or screenwriter. WHHHHHYYYY?
So, come out here with plans to have a job in something other than the film industry, cuz unless you already know someone...good luck
On the other hand, LA is a fun place to live if your livelihood does not depend on the film industry and you live west of the Hollywood Hills. Esp if you're 21+
Good luck!

Im amused by socal locals who b!tch about the supposedly crappy roads. Being most recently from St. Louis, and having bent 4 wheels in 4 years in potholes, the roads here are relatively pristine. But yah the smog makes u worried if u will be able to make babies....
