Front License Plate Help

My friends bought me those metal plates that has the subaru emblem on it. Can I drive with it? Some friends said cops will pull you over for it and some say they wont. My friend had a plain one just a metal plate and he got pulled over in San Francisco for it.

What you mean??? license plate frame? that is metal?

In San Francisco......... i think not......... SFPD pull you over only when you are speed, illegal turn, etc......... other than that they will not pull you over for mod stuff......

I seen alot of people in SF put the license plate on there dash but i think it depend on the cops mood, like 85% SFPD will not likely pull you over but if you go on the freeway that a differnet story....... (CHP

My neighbor got his driver premit and was driving alone, doing 75mph on a 25zone. A cop pull him over and talk to him about blah blah blah and let him go......... So this is how SFPD cops are sometime.....

I personally think it's kinda dumb puting your license plate on your dash....... if you stop very fast that thing will fly at you... and you dont want to know what that feels like

My girlfriend's sister left the registration sticker from the dealer stuck to her window. I think she's had the car for like 2 years now, so i asked her why she never took it off. She said its because unattentive meter maids/cops will see it and assume its a new car and not hassle her about the fact that she doesn't have her front plate on. I dunno if it really works, but she hasn't gotten a ticket yet.

A friend of mine has a 5-year old Camry, and he does something similar (but more insidious).

He runs with the dealer-logo plates, and puts a piece of paper covering his VIN wherever he parks. He says that way the meter maids can't ticket his car even if they wanted to, and afaik he hasn't had a ticket yet. Funny, but this is the same guy who wore a fake moustache for all 4 days he was in Vegas once...

No front plate isn't a moving violation. They can only get you for that after they have pulled you over for something else like speeding or running a stop sign or some other violation. They can ticket you for no plate if you are parked though. It's the same with window tint. They can't pull you over and ticket you for that. You have to give them a reason to pull you over by doing something stupid. So the answer is obvious. Don't give them a reason to pull you over.

Kind of like a 50/50 chance that likely to call a tow truck.... i seen that happen, even it was a first ticket and no street clean

actually they can pull u over if u dont have a license plate or u have ur windows tinted, they dont need u to do somethin stupid to pull u over...im takin course cuz im tryin to b a cop, and everyday im askin my professor who is the sgt of Walnut Creek many questions about being pulled over..(sorry for u people who hate cops, i wanna b one so they stop f-ing with me, and cuz i dont know what else to do)..

But yeah I dont think i'm going to put that plate my friends got me. I already drive without a front license plate but i'll take the chances with that. They gave me license plate frames and i'll put one of those on. One says "Subaru" while the other says "Catch me if you can.... I'll pay for your ticket". Haven't decided which to put on though.

its gona b awhile still got to go to police academy and stuff or else id sign it for u, good thing i know some cops already and they can sign it for me, i know like 5 diff sgt in diff citys so im good for now...im volunteering to be a cop for free, its pretty coo, they give u a badge and everything and u go on ride alongs and they tell u to write people tickets and stuff, the only thing u dont get is the gun which just sucks...

Actually according to the CHP they can't pull you over if you haven't committed a moving violation. Trust me, that is one of only two tickets I've ever had the pleasure of recieving. I was stopped for going 62 in a 55 zone. He gave me a warning on the speeding but, gave me a ticket for no plate. It was not a big deal since it's only a fix it ticket and I got it signed off the next day. Point is, if you do get pulled over, always ask why. I have many friends in law enforcement and this is what they've told me. You cannot be pulled over for anything other than a moving violation. Now, this doesn't include ultra dark limo tint. If the officer can't see the interior of your car through the front windows, then it's probable cause. They can pull you over for that. But, for no front plate, no way.

If you prove me wrong, please state the statute that says so. I'd like to know if things have changed.

actually they can pull u over without a front license plate...like say if the person looks suspicious, and the copper wants to pull him over, he can look and see theres a reason they can pull him over, the copper would go in front of the vehicle and check see if he has a front license plate or not, if not, the copper is gonna pull him over...i know this because my professor's done this before, and he says its perfectly legal...

no big deal actually. I drilled holes in my license plate to match the holes in the front bumper. I'll be dammed if I am going to molest my front bumper to meet some silly license plate requirement.

I saw someone else the other day who chopped the top of the license plate off and made a "low profile" look. I might consider doing the same in the future.

But what's the statute? If he pulls someone over because he or she "looks" suspicious then, that's borderline racial profiling. Why did this person look suspiscious? Were they driving too slow?

You're professor wouldn't have probable cause then. So if this suspicious person did have his front plate on then, he would make up some other excuse to pull him over? Even though he is obeying all traffic laws and not driving recklessly?

It really depends on the officer. If he wants to pull you over, he will. And, if you start being a smarta$$ to him then he will probably call it resisting arrest and haul you away. Again, the only probable cause is the officers judgement.

It's just like back in the day when seatbelt laws started. Not wearing your seatbelt wasn't a moving violation. If you were pulled over for say, speeding, and the officer noticed you weren't wearing your seatbelt. Then, that would be added to your ticket.

It's recently changed to where not wearing your seatbelt is a moving violation and you can be pulled over for not wearing one.

So, again, I ask, where does it say in the california penal code, that you can be pulled over for nothing more than no front license plate?

it's like you said, it really depends on the copper, if he wants to pull u over he will even if you arent speeding, but he has to find something wrong with the car and a lot of people dont have a front lisence plate, and they gonna get pulled over for that and it is illegal if u dont have a front license plate, so you are already giving them a reason to pull u over...probable cause doesnt really come in till he starts to ask u questions...i dont know the penal code, but they can pull u over...i dont know if you guys know this, but cops can pull u over anywhere in california, theres not really a juristiction...

Pulled over last week, stock '03 Z06 with black windows - tint ticket ONLY.

I haven't had a front license plate since 1994. Never had an issue.

Oh another question... lets say I get pulled over for just my front license plate. Can the copper tell me to pop the hood? If he pulls me over for my exhaust, can he also tell me to pop the hood? Just for either not having a front license plate or for having a modified exhaust can he do that?

I'm pretty sure the cop can check your vehicle. He's trying to see if the mods you have done to the car has rendered it an environmental hazard, or unsafe. Then again, I'm from Canada, and we have clean emission acts here. Not sure what they have in California, but I'm guessing that state is pretty hardcore when it comes to vehicle emissions.

yea........ my local install shop told me that when you do a smog check, they have to dyno your car (not awd yet but soon)

and it will cost 3 time the amount you have to pay
