Default How to delete a file that does not want to be deleted?(computer gurus out there)

My suite mate downloaded full metal jacket last year, and now in an effort to free up some space on his laptop he wants to delete it. The movie itself is a large file, although only the first 22 seconds work. When he tries to delete the file it says it is being used by another program, when its not. Does anyone know how to delete the file? He and I have both tried numerous times to delete the lil piece of chit, but it wont comply.

Try deleting the files one by one instead of deleting the entire folder at the same time. Usually by doing this, whatever app that is using that file wont be able to run after all the other files are gone and then you can delete the rest.

the file is just a windows media file, in a folder titled "MY MUSIC" aka just a folder with all his music and movies, and when we right click, and delete it, it wont. How do you run in safe mode or DOS mode, and what would he do once he did run it in either of those settings.

Try changing the security settings and giving the account you log in with full rights. Then try deleting it, it should work.

ok heres what you do

hit cntrl alt del and end the EXPLORER.EXE process

hit file then run and stard CMD

using dos commands go and delete the file

then start explorer back up

the problem your having is that explorer.exe isnt letting go of control of that program, by ending it you are allowing windows to delete it

I have it in CMD mode, but i'm not sure what the commands are to delete a file while in DOS mode. I'd appreciate it if you could give me the commands or at least the basics behind it

You can changet eh security settings by right-clicking a file, chosing properties, then chosing security. Now, find your name, or the Administrators group and assign it all rights. This is if you're running Windows 2000 or Windows XP though.

If that doesn't work you can try safe-mode by pressing the F8 key during the Windows start-up process, and selecting safe mode. If that doesn't work you may have to use recovery mode and for that you will need your Windows 2000 or Windows XP install CD...

depending on the version, "erase" might work better than "del" I dunno why, but "erase" sometimes works better for me .

Del and Erase should be the exact same command if hes using Windows. Typing del /? (or if you need help with any command) will show both ERASE and DEL are the same thing. Besides, erase is just 2 more letters to type.
