Dan_E,
Aren't radar detectors really annoying(they constantly beep) and you need to have them on the top of your dash. Plus they don't seem to be that accurate. What kind do you have and how well does it work? How reliable is it?

thanks

Radar detectors are no way as annoying as tickets.

I have a V1 tucked up behind my rear view mirrior, with the remote display to my left next to the A-pillar, and the remote audio control on the left side of the center console (right in line with the shifter).

I have very quick control of the audio, and can glance down to view what its making all the fuss about.

I have had it since last september, and it paid for itself in less than two months

Thumbs up

You hafta get a 'High Quality' Detector, and you need to understand the diffrent radar bands. I have a BEL detector, and it detects X, K, Ka, Laser, and SWS (Safety Warning System)...It also talks, but thats not the point ...

X band is always microwave's or shopping center electric doors.
K band is usually motorcycle cops, sometimes local police, and this wierd place off of 680 & Mission in fremont sets it off everytime?!?!
Ka band is ALWAYS Police!

Each band has a diffrent beep tone. On my particular detector there is a feature where you can set the tone to beep twice when it detects a signal, and then it makes a very mild click sound, with the intervals representing how strong the signal is. That way the "BLEEEEP" doesn't get so annoying. It also has an LED display that tells you the band, and the strength of the signal, but once you get used to the diffrent tones, you won't even look at it anymore. BEL makes good detectors, so does ESCORT. I've heard high end COBRA's arn't bad, but the "Valentine One" is hands down the best detector on the Market (for $400 it better be) For all you sceptics...GET ONE! Go all out and get a good one! You won't regret it.

2 G's for insurance... damn...

My Insurance guy said if i got a WRX, even with my perfect record, it would be 7 G's a year, because i'm 18... not cool. So I know how you feel Daniel.

I'm interested in what your methods of helping Daniel are, 25RS.com...

Thanx Skywalker,

I'm under my dad's insurance, Farmers, because it's "cheaper"... oh well... i'm not paying it... if i was i'd have a WRX in my drive way. But noooo... I'm talking with Vickey from B-Spec. Her 2.5 RS is pretty much mine. Just gotta get my down to Long Beach to get it.

I was talking to my AWD junkie friend and i had a great idea... CHP needs to get a SKyline and tweak that thing and make it a pursuit car...

So does the radar detector detect only radar from in front of the car, or all around it? Also, can you set the detector to not pick up weak signals that aren't cops? Another thing, you kinda need your music to be not blasting in order to hear the detector, huh?

Has anyone ever used a radar detector and still gotten a ticket? just curious.

Calibretto: How much the detector detects depends primarily upon its mounting location. Most detectors are 360 degrees, so if you mount it in a location that it can sense radar energy 360, it can detect it 360.

And you don't want to necessarily turn down the sensitivity. Radar is line of sight, and often instant lock-on, so you want to detect the signal as soon as possible otherwise the cop will get an accurate read on your speed. Oftentimes you can detect the signals as the cop targets other cars, and those signals may be weak.

For example, cop sits at the bottom of a hill monitoring traffic coming down the hill and (likely) speeding due to the downgrade. The radar waves will, for the most part, travel parallel to the road, and thus up past the top and not down the other side (where you would be driving up the hill). Placing your detector high up in the car would allow aberrant and reflected waves (and thus weaker strength waves) to be dectected before cresting completely over the hill, thus allowing you time to slow down or not speed as you descend. If placed too low, your car will have already crested the hill before the detector detects the radar -- hence the desireability to place the detector as high as possible.

Thus, the first hint that a cop may be lurking around using radar is to "detect" the weaker signals from his radar as he targets other cars -- as once he targets you, you're toast. So you probably don't want to turn down the sensitivity of the detector, otherwise you may not sense the telltale signs that a cop is using radar up ahead.

Question

boostit: Thanks for the info. I'm curious as to how frequently the radar detector beeps if the sensitivity is on high and your driving through city streets/highways. Does it beep so often (say every half minute or so) that you have to decrease speed at every warning it makes? Also, are there beeps that it may make that you know aren't cop radar?
thx

Read my post....X band is never a cop. It's saved my ass on NUMEROUS occasions. A friend of mine got busted and he had a radar detector. But then again, not much time to slow down when going 120 on the freeway
