Question Heated Seats - Relay and Wiring Question

Howdy,

I'm looking to install seat heaters in my 02 Wagon. I'm going to run power line from battery to my center console. Couple of questions:

What is the correct relay size? 10/20/30 Heated seats come with 7.5 AMP fuses.

Where can I get power line into my cabin? Through/under dash and by the stereo or can I run it along drivers door to center console?

Thanks a bunch.

Cheers,
Ret

First off you want to buy the Carbotex brand of seat heaters. You can get them from a number of leather seat resellers here on NASIOC at $90-100/seat. ATD1 comes to mind. Buy the 2-seat Hi/Lo kit as it'll include all the necessary wiring/switches/relays/etc. that you'll need to do the install on two seats. You can easily pull power off the switched cig. lighter lead or similar switched power source. The seat heaters pull a very small load and definitely don't require power run directly from the battery. I run both of mine simultaneously on high with zero problems.

A couple of suggestions...

Get the round switches instead of the rectangular version. The rect. switches can be made to work in the stock switch locations in the console, but they're a lower quality than the round switches. I have them in a Miata and have replaced both due to failure. The round switches I have in the WRX are much nicer. They're small and are easily installed in the side of the console where they're mostly hidden by the side of the seats but are in easy reach when you want to use them.

Use nylon zip ties to re-attach the seat covers to the frames instead of using hog rings. It'll make the install go much more quickly and save you the cost of the special pliers necessary for the hog rings.

Hope that helps. Good luck with the install. You'll love the results.
