Default Needed: Pictures of Legacy Turbo 5spd Trans

Hello Everybody. I am doing some research on the older turbo Legacy's 5spd trans and was wondering if anyone has pictures of one. They can be an underneath shot of it on your car or more preferably a couple pictures of it taken out of your car showing all angles.

I know its asking a lot but hopefully somebody has a few shots.

Brad

It should look the same as your GT tranny with maybe the exception of the rear output shaft.

What are you planning on doing?

I am looking for close up pictures of the turbo trans to find seems or case design variances that would shed some light on whether or not the case is stronger then the newer USDM SOA 5spd trans.

"rack"

Are you planning to stick a new steering rack in sometime soon?

Is your 93 a turbo legacy?

Thanks
Brad

"Put it up on a rack (i.e. car lift)" I'll bet.

That would make more sense. Never thought of it as a rack. Always referred to it as a lift or jack.

if the tranny case is beefier then it doenst flex as much when power is running through it, when it flexes the gears push away from each other and they strip.

Green's got it!

Many people think that the solution to the common problem of stripping gears in highly modified wrxs is to replace the gear set with a much stronger dog box or MRT unbreakable syncro gear set.

Unfortunitely this couldn't be further from the truth. The stock subaru gear set is super strong but the case isn't. Thats why people with dog boxes and the MRT gears still report stripping gears. The weak point is the trans case. It flexes just enough when a large amount of torque is applied to the input shaft quick enough it causes the case to flex and expand just enough to cause the gear teeth to not fully sit in each others grooves. When the gear teeth only half way contact each other and are recieving 300+ lb ft of torque teeth start breaking.

Easier said then done.

You can buy a case brace from MRT but they are upwards of $2500. I haven't seen how they designed it but I am assuming the brace is formed around or molded to fit every little noock of that trans so it doesn't give at all.

Thanks etam. What trans is that?

The STI 6 speed supposedly has a redesigned case that solves the flex problem.

The 6 slotter is a totally new box, no relationship to the 5 except that it is a Subaru.

And flex is not unheard of in the 5sp, there is a company that makes bands to fight this IIRC.

I am gonna have to say no I am sorry, it has been some years since I was looking at that sort of stuff... <showing my age >

I think it was an Australian company... I've no idea if they are any good or not, HTH in some small way. Perhaps AVO will know (they also do dog boxes etc for Subies).
