Default Shifter Shake? (+ short shift kit)

Hyey guys,

Well, I don't usually get to drive a wide range of cars, but the past few weeks I have. A '90 Corolla Wagon, an '01 Golf 1.8T, and a cherry '75 BMW 2002. All standards.

Something I noticed on all of them is that the shifter never moves when in gear, neutral, etc. Whenever my Legacy's shifter in these positions, it vibrates and you can clearly see it doing so. What causes this? Is something broken/about to break? Or is this common behavior on manual equipped BEs?

ALSO-I just noticed on Subaru's webpage they are offering a short-shift kit. I am all about factory parts, so I was thinking of having this installed in a few months. Anyone have any expereince with it?

Thanks alot guys.

-Jeff-

The factory shifter is pretty tall (at least the 2nd Gen is), and does move around quite a bit. In comparison, the shifter in my father's '95 M3 feels completely solid- that seems to be a German trait. --side note- are they still running Getrag trannies?--

As far as the shifter on that '90 Corolla? Interesting. I was once driving an early 90's Corolla, and that shifter was super rubbery & vague.

But I wouldn't worry much about the movement/vibration, unless it's really, really bad. If that's the case, go visit a dealer and hop into a new car, and see if it acts the same.

When I installed a Kartboy short shifter, it certainly alleviated the excess movement. Any short shifter will have similar effects. Putting in the STi tranny mount alleviated even more slop, but introduced a little more vibration.

Last night I was reading my service manual and it said something about the shifter shaking and vibrating...you need to replace a nut ( i think) I cant find the actuall document now. I know in older (95-99) models there is a sleve or something similar to that, that needs to be replaced. Ill keep looking for it and update if I find it.

Jon

EDIT: I found it and it only applies to 96-98 legacys and foresters...sorry about that...im very forgetfull

I found it in Tech TIPS feb 99 from subaru.

"SHIFTER RATTLE
If you encounter a shifter rattle complaint on a 1996/97MY Legacy Outback or on a 1998 Forester, be
advised that the necessary parts to repair the problem should be available through normal parts channels in
February 1999."

and then theres a pic below it telling you what you need to do for each model and year.

Can you scan & post the pic?

I don't have a rattle, I'm just very interested. Sounds linkage-related.

Hmm. It's not terrible, just pisses me off. I guess I'll do the short shift kit in a few months and see if that takes care of it.

Thanks fellas.

It could be related to old engine and tranny mounts. my buddys old volvo shifter swings around when he takes corners.

Well, it's a 2003 with 3700 miles on it so I would hope nothing wore out that quickly...

I think there's 3 different shifter "movements" we're talking about here:

1. looseness- the factory shifter is pretty tall, and does "wander" a bit. This motion will be reduced substantially with a short shifter. It will also be lessened with a Group N tranny mount.
2. vibration- happens in all shifters to some extent; but it will be increased with tranny mounts or aftermarket linkage bushings. It will likely also be more noticeable if you have a light weight shift knob.
3. rattle- I think this rattle is neither of the above, and is adressed by that TSB.

Jeff- since your car is very new, if it has a rattle, I'd take it to the dealer and let them have a look. If there's something loose, or something that needs attention, it should be fully warrantied.

Interestingly, there was a bit of vibration in my stock shifter and as KD said I just chalked it up to normal. Usually the tighter a shifter is the more driveline vibration that gets transmitted through it.

When I went to the Kartboy short shifter(which I absolutely love) the vibration got more pronounced AND I began to notice a bit of rattle at certain rpm levels. I did a search at that time and found this was common with the KB shifters and there was even a fix for it. But honestly it has bothered me enough to bother with fixing it. I'll see if I can find that info again.

Here's a good one: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...shifter+rattle

But do a search using [kartboy shifter rattle] and you will get everything you need even for the oem shifter prob, the probs are pretty based on the same thing.
