Post Anyone with Larry Ganz's intake.....

This is an awesome intake, but does anyone else's intake rattle really loud? Mine did so I bought this pipe insulator from Home Depot, slit it down the middle and wrapped it around the intake where it goes into the fender, twice . It worked great for a while but I'm starting to hear the rattle again. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks
Jon

Hey man, you must have bought somewhat early in the game as did i. actually if you email larry, i wouldnt be shocked if he flew out to your house to fix it, then took you out to dinner

When i had this same problem, he had me helped out in a minute..he called me up and sent me some stuff and it was just amazing tech support.

Anyways, he had me use some Weatherstripping that was sticky on one side and i wrapped it around the edge of the intake where it enters the fender..This 100% solved the problem.

hope that helps

No, I used all that, the rubber hose and the weather stripping, but it was rattling so bad that the weatherstripping basically fell apart. I still have the rubber hose on.

No rattling on mine.
It fits into the hole nice and easy. There's no spring in it so it does not want to snap back if it moves around.

I suggest you give Larry a call. You may just have one that's not well aligned.

PS. Mine's been on all types of roads including rough forest tracks without rattles.

Talking

I would try loosening up the two hose clamps on the end where it attaches to the airbox, and reposition the intake, then tighten the two clamps again.

Then, remember that the closed cell foam pipe insulation might make more noise when the it rubs against the rubber hose lining the hole than weather strip would. And, the engine is gonna have some rocking motion on the motor mounts when you rev it unless you get STi motor mounts, thus it rubs.

I did the weather strip as two rows of 1" x 3/8" weatherstrip, and it doesn't make noise or fall apart. Do I need to send you some more of the fatter weather strip we use now?

ALSO, Uktena here on iClub found a really slick and professional way to solve this issue - he went to Home Depot and spent $3.98 on a part in the plumbing section that is a rubber 2" to 3" connector, with two hose clamps. The 2" end is actually about 2-3/8 inch, and fits very tightly over the very end of the 2.5" aluminum tube. You have to remove all the hose clamps from the new adapter first, then use the larger hose clamp to tighten the adapter onto the end of the intake tube. This creates a rubber extension to the intake, which goes into the hole to stop rattling WITHOUT any rubber hose or weatherstrip.

It looks great and we would like to include this in future versions. We have been looking at more cost cutting so we can afford to ship this upgrade without raising the shipped cost above the magic $99.95 mark. One problem is it would push us up from 3lbs to 4lbs shipped and raise that cost, and the money we save from eliminating the rubber hose and weather strip doesn't cover the cost of the new part. And, the new part makes the intake longer, so if we assemble it onto the intake before shipping, we will have to start looking for boxes that fit the intake all over again.

Only 4 people out of 80 have complained about rattling, and so this was kinda placed on the back burner. Maybe I need to move it up a bit...

I will install the adapter on my intake when I get my car back from getting new 1st gear synchros, and then upload pics of it to my site of before and after instalation.

However, anyone can upgrade their intake this way by simply visiting home depot or similar store. I will try to update the pdf instructions I have posted at www.imprezars.com/images/install.pdf after I have pictures to include in it.

Let me know if this takes care of it for you. You could have emailed me and I would have been happy to help.

Larry, I'm not by any means complaining or trying to make people not buy from you, if that's what you're thinking. In fact, I love your intake and show it off to evreyone at school. I just thought that by posting here I'd get more suggestions from people faster.
I'm sure you're swamped with e-mails from people about the intake and filter so I didn't want to bother you.

Thumbs up

Well, it seems the general consensus on this board is that Larry's intake is perhaps the best bang for the buck. My question: does it work for MY99's? Or just MY00?

Thanks,

J. Kent
