Default A/C stuck on?

Hi all,

This is my first time in the legacy forum as a Legacy owner! I am the new owner of a 2002 L wagon 5-speed.

After purchasing the car, I have notice a slight rough idle every now and then attributed to when the radiator fan kicks on. I started paying more attention and noticed the fan would kick on even when the engine was stone cold. Hmm. So on a hunch I check to see if it was the condensor fan, and sure enough it was. Checked the A/C compressor, and it was on. Ok, well I double checked the A/C switch and it was off. I switched it on and off a couple times, it made no difference. The A/C runs 100% of the time unless the blower fan is off.

Anybody have an idea why this could be? If for some reason the switch was accidently disconnected (say when the dealer originally installed the cabin filters..) would this be the behavior?

Also, another weird one; The air recycle switch does not work when the defroster vents are selected. Is this correct funciton? I guess it could be this way to prevent people from fogging up their windows, but it seems really dumb.

Thanks for any insight.

My A/C runs in both defrost and defrost/floor choices.

Try any of the other 3 and see if the compressor is still on.

The a/c runs to defrost the windows.

Mine also does not re-circ in defrost - makes sense.

really? I guess I need to read back through the manual. If that's true, it's really lame. Can't I decide when I want stuff on or off anymore?

I have been thinking what my first mod will be...maybe this will be it! Take back the power!

Thanks for the response!

If I do not want the compressor running, I just put it on vent.

Only the two defrost settings run the compressor.

I guess you could put a swirch in the fuse or so..

I like the ability to quickly defrost, and the A/C helps this.

I do not like the fact that if I have the thing on floor, and then go to bi-level, the bias is for floor, and if I have it on vent, and turn it to bi-level, the bias is for vent.

silly pet peeves...
