Unhappy I'm a lawbreaker! (OT & very long)

Yesterday on the way home from work, just cruising along, I got pulled over again! Isn't it strange how you are never really concerned about your speed until you notice that police car pulling out of his hiding spot looking right at you?

I knew I was speeding, but wasn't sure how fast (or what the speed limit was on that stretch of road). By the time the officer got behind me I was already in a left turn lane waiting for the green arrow at an intersection. The light turns green, I proceed to turn left, start to accelerate (to the speed limit only this time) and for a few minutes think to myself "Cool, he isn't going to pull me over!". Then it happens, on come the red & blues, flashing headlights and siren..."Great"! I pull to the right lane, but there is nowhere to pull off (no side roads, no emergency lane, curbs on either side), so I proceed slowly trying to find a safe spot to pull over (Quite embarassing driving down the highway at 10mph for a mile or so with a police car behind you flashing all his lights!).

I finally see a side road and pull off the highway, roll down the windows and shut off the car, leaving my seatbelt on and hands on the wheel (to let the officer know I am not a threat to his safety). He asks me where I am going in such a hurry, "Home from work" I say. "Do you know how fast you were going back there?" he asks, "No sir, I really wasn't paying attention". "You were coming up on 80mph back there, the speed limit is only 50mph. Do you have a Drivers License?". "Yes sir", and I get it and hand it to him. "I'll be right back with you", he says, and heads for the cruiser.

Now I'm getting pissed at myself, I hate to blow $200 on a ticket, I'd rather spend it on the car! My wife is gonna kill me, I'll have to sell the Subie and get a '76 Chevette! I notice the officer coming back.

"Mr. Conklin, how much trouble would you be in with your wife if you came home with a $200 ticket this afternoon?" he asks. "A whole lot of trouble" I respond. "That's why I'm only giving you this warning, put it on your visor and leave it there to remind you to obey the speed limit." he says, I suddenly feel a wave of releif and say "Yes sir, thank you".

As I pull back onto the highway I notice the officer a few cars back, so I make an effort to stay at or below the speed limit (of 45mph now). That was the hardest driving I have ever done! The RS just wants to GO...45 felt so unbelievably slow I thought I might fall asleep. I had to use the cruise control and even then I felt like I was holding the cars potential back. So it wasn't my fault I was speeding, it's the cars fault! I'll bet Geo Metros don't beg to be driven faster and harder! Damn Impreza...If it didn't put such a huge grin on my face everytime I drove it, I'd get rid of it before it makes me lose my license!

Lucky, Opie!

I have to go to court to fight my little ticket of testing the car's potential in the back of a parking lot(if you remember my topic on that). I found the statute he wrote on the ticket and it only spoke of roads and highways so that may help me out a little.

I haven't been pulled over in my RS...Yet...I think I've almost been pulled over once or twice, but somehow the cop didn't notice me maybe ? Lucky me to have the firehouse parking lot to go play in and no one to bother me there...Too bad there's not much in the way of dirt to play in, though

Lucky guy!
I think that if you stay honest and don't start bullsh@tting the cops remain cool.
Speeding doesn't occur below 100mph anyways...
Wonder what one(a friend of a friend of a coworker of my wife of course :-) ) would get for 130 in a 65?
=^)

Will, I think its time to surrender the RS...to me! I'll part with my L. Hey, its got a great stereo system, tint and alloys. Plus it's easier to get the car seat in and out of, 'cause its got four doors!

Subi Chick - Chevette not Corvette.

Opie - I know how it is... I've been trying to be good for the past *counts on fingers* 8 months since the first ticket I got this year. Since then I got two more, but I just have to wait until late next March and I should be ok (we have a 3-ticket year limit... supposedly on the 3rd you get your license suspended, but my third was in Wisconsin). Keeping this thing slow is REALLY trying, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Thumbs up

The Gods smiled upon you and your Scoobie.

Florida ain't lenient on speeders either - without a state income tax, the cops need every ticket they can get.

If it wasn't for driver's school, Florida would have revoked my license at two different times.

You are absolutely right about the "paying attention" part. I've never gotten a ticket when I was intentionally speeding, but many tickets when I was just driving at my comfort level. 80 in a 50 is nothing is there is no traffic, you are on a 4 lane highway with dividers and turn lanes, and it is great weather conditions.

Enjoy your GetOutofJailFree card!

matt in fl - Thanks for the offer...but one L in the family is enough for me! Boy will I be in trouble when she trades it in on the WRX wagon!

8Complex - Funny thing is I owned a Chevette all through high school, what a machine!

T-WRX - Yeah, the driving school thing saved me a couple of times. Too bad they only let you attend that class 3 times in a lifetime, I've already used all mine up!

This morning on the way to work I was doing the speed limit, people were flying by me, honking, yelling, flipping me off. You get so respected by other drivers when you obey the law!

They changed it, you can do the driving school more than 3 times... I think once a year is the new thing...

Glad you didn't have to spend the $200...

Unhappy

Man, I wish I were so lucky. I got shot by laser early in the morning last week going way too fast in a 55 here in NY.
Anyone know if it's possible to have a violation reduced?

Opie -

I used used up my quota in 24 months! Then it was time to move states.

I haven't lived in a state that has nastier troopers than Florida. The county/city cops would cut you a break, but troopers? Yeah right. Must be the cowboy hat. . .

TT- Yep.. just plead not guilty and go to court, you'll see the officer and he'll 'talk' to you. He'll offer you a lower charge. Just accept it and you're on your way. Have cash, because I don't think the NY courts take checks. Which town off of 684 did you get busted on? The acceptable limit is 72 on that road.

Thanks Chuck! I was actually stopped on 84W, not 684. Oh, and I'll be sure to bring cash; NY does accept checks, but they must be certified.

Yeah but think of all the advanatages of going to those classes...it is a regular car show in the parking lot; scoobie, corvette, camero, rustangs, high speed bikes, geo metro...(instructor)....
