Question Mazda MX5 Miata Type-R?

So, I was at a friends house the other day. In his garage sits his brother's Miata. Not sure what year, but probably a few years old. Anyway, he's done a lot of work to it, including head work and a cat-back exhaust, and the standard cosmetic changes as well.

On the back window, there's a Type-R sticker. Looks just like the Integra Type-R logo. So, another friend and I started debating over it. Chris thinks that there is a Miata Type-R, and I don't.

Can anyone settle this debate for me? I couldn't find anything about a Miata Type-R on the web, but I wanted to know for sure.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff "Still Subieless" Handley

There are no Type-R miatas, at least, not here. The only thing they have is the M edition, which is kinda the "Luxury" version of the miatas. I was looking at them, before my Sube, so i know which kinda are around

There was such a thing as a Miata R, but I think that the decal you see is indeed a Honda one.

The Miata R originally had no power steering, no AC, and was the first to get the bilstein struts and torsen diff.

Check out this link for the specific models available from '90 to '97.

The R package was available from '94 to '97.

Also, you can browse this for more information.

Enjoy!

I was selling Miatas when the R package was available.

I drooled over it, but no one ordered any through our dealership. It was after the RX-7 R package (RX7 R1) and it never sold well to normal folks.

I remember, it was an "A" package miata with no p/s and better suspension.

I have never seen or heard of Miata Type-R.
There may have been R-Package, but they were not sold as Type-R I guess.
But, I have seen "Mugen" Grand Am and "Mugen" VW Golf!! They were just stickers.
I thought Mugen was only for Hondas.

Yeah, the car had no extra badging, it was just a model option. There were no Mazda Type R stickers. The closest thing that came from the dealer as an official part number was a factory stripe option. Two stripes down the center of the car. And close to the windshield, the stripes widened to the edges of the base of the glass. Sounds strange, but didn't look too bad.

The Miata "R" model was offered from 94 thru 97. The newer body style (99 & 2000) changed the name from "R" to Sport. Basically, it's a lightweight version with the suspension package and was the preferred model to use in autocrossing. There were few options to keep the weight down; not even electric windows or door locks. They are fairly rare and are mistaken for the base model more often than not. 1997 saw just 47 sold in the US.

How do I know this? I also have a 99 Miata and autocross it, gathering little nuggets of useless info like this along the way.

How about a BMW 5 series with a big Spoon Sports logo on his back tinted window? LOL.

Seriously though, aren't the new Eunos Roadster's in Japan packing 170hp or something like that? Now THAT would be a fun car!
