Post About all the supposed WRX spy pics....

I am certain that everything we've seen thus far is a fake. For one, there was that article from prodrive that said none of the pics look anything like the new impreza. Then later we get that article about the journalists that actually test drove it. His final sentance said it was going to be contraversial.

Looking at the pics themselves, they all have the same basic body style of the current impreza. I don't think theres anything new or contraversial about that. Remember, subaru has said its going to be a completely new car, not just a minor re-styling. These new pics with the headlights ala, Neon, or MGF still have the same basic front and rear end. Someone obviously doctored in new headlights, and taillights, and several other minor changes. Then theres the supposed spy pics of it lapping the Nurburgring. First of all, why would they be testing the new Impreza in Europe this soon in its design. More likely any testing thus far has gone on in Subaru's private test track in Japan. Then looking at the pic itself, the body style was exactly like the current impreza. Either those pics were fake as well, or Subaru is testing the new Impreza with old body panels on it to fool the media(unlikely they'd go that far out of their way though). I just think they are all fake. I'm sure they will give us something good. The current body style has been around so long that it would be stupid to think they'd only be doing a minor re-styling. They do a lot of research to find out what people like in a sports car. I'm sure they know these spy pics suck, and will put out a good product in the end.

The only thing I'm worried about is the rumors that there will be no 2dr for the US.

The 2 door thing isn't a rumor...4 doors & 5 doors only.

While I'm sure that the "No Coupes" decision is going to be at least as controversial as the new body style (and I agree, I doubt we've seen anything even close yet), I'm looking forward to a 5-door RS or even Turbo.

That is the ultimate everyman car At least, everyman with a growing family and too many hobbies!

Sorry to disappoint everyone, but it seems that the latest spy pictures are the real thing!

The car has been in development for quite a while now (probably at least 18 months), and not just in the past few months. Production of the existing cars will soon stop, as they convert the production lines to produce the new model.

It's true that a 2 door won't initially be offered (this was the same with the current Impreza range), and next years rally car will most likely be a 4 door.

Why do they test in Europe - well car manufacturers test their new models all over the world, to make sure that they cope with all the different climates and road conditions.

With the new 2.0 turbo destined for the US, I would be very surprised if there wasn't at least one or two models of the new car undergoing rigorous testing over there at the moment. Given that the majority of motorists in the US wouldn't know what the current Impreza, was they are unlikely to spot the significance of the new car in some remote areas! Same thing goes for certain parts of Europe, which aren't as heavily populated as others.

I still say the reliability of the photos are sketchy at best...

Thumbs down

After taking a look in Photoshop, there were some very obvious vertical lines in the photos. Looks like a chop job, but with such a low res image it is somewhat hard to tell. One can only hope.

According to someone who runs the ETA sumthing site (he posted this on another brit scooby board) he asked his friend who made the sketch who claims to of seen the New WRX uncovered at SOJ, and his friend said it is the New Impreza. Also here is what one guy says on the same board.:

Hi,
Guys, these pictures are real! I'm sorry we can only show you some unsharp fragments, but Dick (the guy who took the pictures) promised them to autovisie (Dutch Mag).

I've got the real pictures here and can tell you this is certainly an improvement. The car look much more muscular then the current model. Don't look to details like headlights or rear, wait till you see the total picture!

It looks like 235/35/18 will fit nicely and after adding a big spoiler and a lower suspension and this car will really look awesome (my opinion).

I will put another detail on the Dutch Subaru-forum!

Why wait to see if its really more muscular. Just use photoshop and make your own. Take teh Neon front end and the Accent rear end. Then graft them onto the Impreza. Sorry but those don't look like 22B fenders. They look more like Focus fenders. How can Subaru call that a new design. There's nothing new about it. They just copied other cars taht are already out there. Oh and no more hood vents? So maybe Prodrive will end up using another car in the WRC? Its too bad that this is going to be as good as it gets for the US. If you want something done then you have to settle for half ass.

Siper: Don't regret your RS if the WRX comes in March to May of 01... Remember, the RS and the WRX will be different models most likely. If the WRX is $4000 to $6500 more than the RS, could you have afforded it? If the factory turbo is boring and hard to upgrade, wouldn't your rather have a turbo in your MY00 RS? Plus, do you want to take a chance on a first-year US turbo, even if the euro models are rock solid?

I'm in the same dilemma. I can afford to pay probably $10k more than the RS, but the warranty issue is a big deal for me [not wanting to void it with obvious and major changes], and so is the styling issue. I do want a 5 door though....so I wait

Anybody got a link to the Focus group? I want to see if they have any info on the Cosworth Focus coming to the US.

If the body change is that drastic (I don't HATE it, I just don't like it as much as the current gen) then the supposed new "flood" of aftermarket parts won't help us.

Different engine, different body, different everything. Sigh.

According to an Australian journalist who has just driven the new Impreza, it is nothing like the spy pictures.
As for the current Impreza, it's production was stopped in april already.
The only things he said were, that the Turbo (now called WRX) will have 215/45 R17 tyres and a 5 speed gearbox (for the first year), and ths STI is goning to be wearing 225/40 R17 and has a 6 speed gearbox.
the best thing is to wait to the end of august and prepare the funds to buy it.
