Exclamation Insurance Adjusters Ahoy!

So everyone knows my beautiful MY99 RS was trashed by a fool in a Taurus. Well, the insurance company finally got around to make me an offer which is $6000 (yeah I said 6 G's) lower than what it's worth!! They claim my aftermarket parts don't increase the value of the vehicle! BS I say! They just don't want to pay!

I asked the adjuster a hypothetical question regarding a valuable item in the car broken during the crash:

Adjuster: "Sure we'd pay for that"
Me: "How are my mods any different?"
Adjuster: "They just are!"
Me: Murderous glare that he cannot see over the phone.

So all you insurance guru's, PLEASE let me in on the secret to recovering my loss!!

Thanks!

Unhappy

Aftermarket parts don't increase the value of your vehicle. If something aftermarket is damaged that costs more than a new OE piece, you're out the difference.

In some rare instances an insurer may cover the add-ons / replacements but it's par for the course to not do so... unless you've specifically noted (and probably paid for) additional coverage.

Exclamation

Colin don't be giving me news like that!

I told the adjuster that I have the original parts, he didn't care. I want my parts back or the $$ I'm out!

All my cars over the past 10 years were all "updated" with aftermarket. From dress-up to performance.

I have always had the "luck" of collecting 3rd party.

The best case scenario that ever happened while trying to collect 3rd party:

The aftermarket stuff was paid for BUT after proving purchase/invoices and taking a 30% depreciation off the top.

Best of luck.

OBSS I can handle that. It's the $6000 difference I'm not willing to settle for. $4200 (30% less) is better than nothing.

Which insurance company do you have? I have State Farm and they cover any aftermarket items that you can provide receipts for, though they don't cover them at 100%. They use a sliding scale depending on how old the parts are. I would look up the book value of your car (in stock condition) and tell the insurance company that is what you want for the car. Them claim the aftermarket items as miscellaneous items damaged in the accident.

Get a lawyer involved if necessary.
Good Luck.

Hmm, why don't you guys get additional riders for add-on products? My car is covered for an additional $8k worth of parts [lcd stereo w/ nav and car pc, raceline 17 rims and tires, etc] and if someone steals my car or damages these parts, i'm covered for replacement cost of getting the same parts. i believe i only pay like $24 a month extra, but i could be a little off, it might be a bit cheaper than that even. i took pictures of all installations including rims in brand-new condition, attached a receipt, and filed them in the firebox at home. if i ever have a problem, my insurance company said just show them all that was done and they'll make sure it's back to the condition it was in pre-claim.

i used to have close to $15k in add-ons on my pickup [no visual add-ons, all technical stuff] and someone stole it and stripped ton of it. within a month i had my truck back in the same condition, and two of the parts i had in it [stereo related] were replaced with that year's product. i was out my $250 deductable and like 5% for wear and tear, but in the end i probably only paid about $1000 out the door for $15k worth of parts!

Well it must be freakin' nice! My insurance company, Progressive, is playing the hard-a$$. This guy won't budge. I guess I'll have to find a lawyer, but then I lose 1/3 of what I receive.

Ack. I've never heard of progressive, is that one of the phone-only insurance places? I only deal with top line insurance companies with agents I can go and bitch at.. Like Allstate or State Farm or whatnot. Sometimes saving 15% off of $100 a month doesn't pay

Lightbulb

Read your policy, if it states that they will reimburse you the pre-accident value in the event of a total loss, then that would include the accessories! Insurance companies are always trying to pressure you to accept their lowest "settlement", just keep saying no until you get what you deserve. You pay them to protect you from loss so they shouldnt "make" you take less than the car was worth!

Plus it wasn't you fault, the other guy should have to cough up the difference then! He is responsible!

Opie, that's what I'm talking about! They shouldn't pressure me to take anything! It wasn't my fault, so they need to give me a large enough claim to put me back to where I was before the accident!
