Have a Nice Day? Airbag light won't shut off...

A few weeks ago my airbag light refused to shutoff once I started driving...I finally brought it in to the dealer to get checked out. Since I'm over the 36,000 miles (I've got a '98 OBS) it's supposedly not covered under the warranty.
They plugged it into their computer and it came up with a couple of error codes-which basically told them there's something wrong- But they don't know what it is. Now they're saying they've got to spend 3-4 hours (at $65 per hour) to go through the wiring to figure out what might be wrong.
I've always taken it to the dealer for all tune-ups, so the service guy said he'd get ahold of the Subaru rep to see if they could find a way to get it covered...if not 100% maybe 50-50...
I'm just hoping they cover it 100%. If I get in an accident, and my airbag doesn't work...well, let's just say I'll be writing some letters if they don't cover it...

Has anyone else had any weird wiring things happen?

My little sister's VW is also having the same problems you just discribed. Car just out of warrenty and electrical problems including a lit air-bag light (started off with blowing the brake lights every month + the brake light fuse).

Someone recommended trying to reset the ECU, which might be sending the warning lights in error. I'm going to try that on the VW as soon as I figure out if the ECU reset procedure is the same as the Subaru.

So did I.

All I know is, this family is NEVER going to buy a VW again. They are too complex to work on and this one has been having too many problems.

I believe safety stuff is covered for at least 6/60k or something (like the rust through warranty)

Already been to the dealership.. Still talking to regional rep. And the Dealership service department has been exceptional, so it is not a problem with service.

Cool

Howdy,

They should be able to identify the problem.

The monitor/computer device will pinpoint faults down to individual sensors. It has a test faulty built in that allows them to test each part of the system.

The Air bag system actually has its own computer. Located in the centre console.

I wouldnt be worried about it not going off during an accidient, but rather it going off while you're just driving around.

Any warnings related to safety equipment should be checked RIGHT AWAY. Not after a few weeks !

Yeah, this is real important. I would not be driving around in it with the light on.
And, I also think it is covered for at least 5yr/60k, or life.
Has the car ever been hit in the front/repaired before?

The service manager said that it wouldn't just go off as I'm driving around...that would be way too dangerous, but that it most likely wouldn't engage if I got in an accident.

When the problem first started to happen, the warning light would go off as normal, until I turned a corner or went up a hill...which led me to believe it was just a faulty sensor. That's why I waited to have it checked.

I've never been in an accident, that's why I believe that once they talk to the Sub rep, I'll probably not have a problem getting them to cover it.

I also was under the false impression that the airbag would be covered for the life of the car...but it doesn't appear to be the case.
I'll keep you all posted on what happens!

Question

it's a tough call on the warrenty, here in the manual it says "SEAT BELT COVERAGE lasts for the useful life of the vehicle and includes seat belts and related components which fail to function properly."

The Airbag is an SRS and is only ment to be used in conjuction with the seat belts, this would lead me to belive that the SRS is covered by the seat belt warrenty. Call up SOA and ask them.

Do your horn and cruise work? If not, I'd bet it's the combination switch. I just had mine replaced (under warranty) in my 1999 2.5RS. I originally noticed only the AIRBAG light but then later realized the cruise and horn didn't work (since I don't use either that often).

The VW airbag light was fixed for free, even though it was 1000 miles out of warrenty. Now that is customer service.

Still ticked off at the car though.

Well,
here's the latest! (by the way, my horn does still work...)
The dealer contacted their SOA rep, and the diagnostic (the 3-4 hours it's going to take for them to figure it out...) is going to be covered by them. Even though I'm well over the warranty (43,000) Once they've had it all day (I hate to leave my car!) they'll talk to the rep again to see if the repair will be covered too. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Either way 3-4 hours at $65 an hour...I'm glad they're helping out on that front!
I'll keep you posted on what exactly is the problem!

FWIW, seat belts and other mandatory safety equipment(airbags) are covered for the life of the car under federal law.

I know this because my moms 1992 Buick just got the seatbelts replaced and this is what the service manager told me when I went to go pick it up for her.

They're claiming it's an "electrical" problem...so I'm not sure if it falls under that law or not. Either way-I'm hoping not to have to pay a dime!

This is probably a bad roll connector in the steering column. Mine dropped dead after about 10k kilometres. Replaced under warranty by dealer, but took several weeks to get the parts. If you horn and cruise don't work also, this is likely the problem.

Thumbs up

Well, just talked to the dealer. They've had my car in there all morning trying to figure out the problem. They've found that it's the "Airbag Controller" it costs about $1200, but after they talked to their Sub. rep, Subaru is paying for it.

I'm really pleased so far with how this has turned out. Let's just hope that once the part comes in, and it's installed, that's what the actual problem is!
Either way, no money out of my pocket yet!
