Post Turbo/Super chargers and emissions tests...

Is there any info on whether or not adding a turbo/super charger to your car affects emissions testing? Anyone have any problems getting past emissions with a turbo?

I don't think it will pass the visual test and the turbo has to have a CARB certified number. But there are some places here in So Cal that will smog it illegaly and pass you.

If visual "testing" isn;t done and you have it in tune, a good cat and a good o2 sensor you should pass w/o trouble.

The turbo kits are not CARB approved. Every kit I've seen replaces or removes the stock cats. (In NJ, thats illegal unless they are damaged some how, only then you can replace them with an aftermarket cat) There are big fines to discourage shops from doing that.

The s/c does not require any mods to the exhaust so... they are "more" legal. The stock cats do there job well, but hinders performance.

Bottom line is that most of the time forced induction requires an increased in fuel (so that the engine does not go boom) and adding fuel effects your emissions.

Both kits can be tuned well enough to pass an emissions test.

(oh... and cams can effect emissions too!)

Thumbs up

I just passed inspection in my turbocharged MY98! They were close to opening the hood when I told them it was a 2.5L, then they just closed it without a further look. I stood down at the end waiting for them to finish. They looked under the car, and obviously got in the car. They almost stalled the car at least twice thanks to the Primitive clutch. Then they had 5 Autometer gauges staring at them, along with the Jumptronix A/F and the J&S monitor! They never said a word to me about them, though. They did check for a cat.

The car finally made it down to me and the guy went into a small booth. I waited. When he came out I was waiting for him to put the ol' red sticker in the window. When he grabbed the scraper, I was like, "Whew!" He put the new 2 year sticker in the window and gave me my report. I passed (close call on carbon monoxide though).

The most interesting thing is that there is a test called "Tampering" on the form which simply said "Passed". Heh.

I was under the impression that you could make any mods as long as you pass the emmisions test..... Maybe Texas is different though.

How about other mods like intercoolers, non-stock air intakes? Do these noticeably affect emessions testing?

SteveS,
You said they nearly stalled it? Are you subjected to Dyno Testing in Jersey?

Here is CA they are starting Dyno emissions testing, but AWD are currently exempt and only subject to visual and sniffer tests.

Turbos and SC and intercoolers are illegal w/o CARB cert. in this state, but if they don't look and just snif, you can pass.
Other states, don't care at all as long as the tail-pipe emissions are clean.

Matt ~~ There is dyno testing in NJ, but not for AWD. They did the old sniff test at an unloaded 2600 RPM or so. I'm happy, let me tell ya!

WRX Pilot,

I know some Honda guys that hang out with a guy named Ben Franklin who says different! You just gotta know the right smog tech.
And some don't even care. They didn't even question my JDM Honda swap when I took my car in.
