Post Lime Rock time trial results - I beat an ITR!! (long)

Well, the club I run auto-x with finally got the results of our June 8th time trial at Lime Rock Park posted on their site, so I can do some gloating. This was my second open track event, and my first at LRP. It was also my first time running R compound tires (Kumhos, 225/50ZR-15). For those of you who want just the facts, check out http://www.cartct.com/6800results.htm . I was car #40 in Group 6, car #58 in Group 8 was an ITR on R-compound tires, and car #160 in Group 7 was also an ITR (bumped up a group due to mods, it was clearly lowered)). Car #25 was a Turbo Legacy on street tires. Just a note - neither of the ITR drivers was in my novice practice group, so they were both had more experience than me. Oh, and another note - the two ITR drivers were driving factory tuned sports car tipping the scales at 2800lb (maybe less?), while I was driving a 3250lb 4 door family performance sedan.

First, observations about the track and event as a whole. The club requires all new-comers to LRP to go out with an instructor for a few laps with the instructor driving. So the instructor hopped into my car and we led the novice group out for the first few laps. As soon as we enterred the first turn I realized that these new tires were gonna be fuuuunnn!! Now I just need to get some wider rims to put them on and they'll really be able to work!

I wasn't too impressed by the track at LRP, but I guess I was a bit spoiled by my first OT event which took place at a freshly repaved track. LRP has a lot of concrete patches in the corners, which really made things rough at times. I can't imagine how the open wheel cars handle that stuff without crushing vertebrae. I think the AWD definitely came in handy on the concrete, which was noticeably slicker than the asphalt.

The course was pretty easy to get a hang of, but I don't think I ever hit the Big Bend correctly (180deg turn at the end of the main straight). It's tough to force yourself to stay on the outside of a big turn like that, waiting to catch the late apex. A few times, when I was following someone who knew what they were doing, I got the line through there pretty good, but generally I was cutting too far inside too early. The same thing was getting me as I enterred the Esses (series of turns immediately after the Big Bend) - I kept cutting in too early on the first turn.

I was comfortable enough on the track that I was able to experiment a bit with technique, particularly on one fast uphill right hander. You start the turn, and then go up the hill. Initially I was downshifting to 3rd to take that corner, probably about 5500rpm in 3rd. As I got better, though, I was taking the hill at 6250rpm in 3rd. When I had tried to stay in 4th earlier in the day (taking the hill a bit slower) it had seemed like I didn't have any oomph at the top of the hill, so I decided to take it in 3rd. At the higher speed, though, I was having to immediately shift to 4th at the top of the hill. I ended up deciding to stay in 4th after comparing my speeds at the top of the hill on a couple laps - I was actually slightly faster at the top of the hill if I stayed in 4th.

I had quite a few good runs with other drivers. Unfortunately I was having technical difficulties with my videocam, so I missed taping the first two practice sessions. In the second session I had a few good laps with car #49, a C5 Vette on stock street tires. Strangely enough, my time trial times ended significantly better than his. When we were practicing, though, he was definitely pulling away from me - I was able to maintain my ground through the twisty bits, but then he'd pull away a bit on the main straight and the short back straight. At the time he was following car #14 (I think) so perhaps he got a good line from that car, but wasn't able to duplicate it on the track by himself.

There were a couple pretty sweet cars there. The fastest of the bunch was a 993 series Porsche 911. During the practice sessions that thing was absolutely haulin' ash (58.xx laps). I figured it was a turbo - big spoiler out back and all that. Turns out it was all suspension - the car had the stock 315hp N/A engine. The interior was gutted, it was running on P-Zero slicks (can you say "I'm loaded"?), and the thing even had air jacks on it. How cool is that?

All in all I was quite happy with my performance. I think it's probably pure chance, but in addition to running pretty good times, I also ran very consistent times during the 2 timed laps. Other than car #7, who ran the exact same time on both laps (?!), I had the best consistency - only 0.015sec difference between the lap times. I think I'm ready for F1 now.

Car #12 is really a nasty Mustang - naturally aspirated 302, shifting at 7200rpm, 450+ hp. Some of these guys have been doing this together for a long time, and they like to be smart alecks.

Head...about...to....explode.

Open track events are definitely a blast. I'm surprised I don't read about more people here on the board doing them, especially considering how performance oriented most of us are. If you ever get the chance, DO IT!! It's well worth the money ($239 for my first event, a 2 dayer, and $140 for the one day at LRP).

Thanks for the comments.

Pat, just wanted to float your topic and say GOOD JOB!

Good driver in a bad car (not that the legacy is!) will almost always beat a bad driver in a good car.
