Question K&N install

How do I get at the filter to put in my new K&N one, I know it's in that black box near the fender but I can't figure it out... I undid some clips and thought that would be enough but there was a large pipe still attatched to it?!

Any help would be great... and to the moderators, I know this is more of a tech question but this board is where all the people are, so please don't close it down on me

Gary

I'm assuming you have a 99 or earlier Impreza. You'll have an easier time if you remove the black pipe that comes off of the airbox. It's just held on with a few hose clamps. Then after you undo the clips the whole top will open hinge like towards the center of the car. It's held closed on the other side by tabs. When you put in the K&N it may be pretty snug mine was. Make sure you get the filter sealed up properly. Look how the Old one sits in there and make sure the K&N sits the same way before shutting the box.

Read the owners manual on how to change the filter. It's in there.

If you get all 4 clips then you can just push/bend the thing out of the way, but there's a small vacuum tube underneath that'll probably pop off. I got my K&N in '98 when they didn't have one listed in the catalog, and I had to do a little creative trimming on the flange to get it to shut again.

There is also a screw that needs to be removed on the driver side of the air box on my car. If you have the factory alarm it's the screw that holds the siren in place
