[sarcasm] Oh no... someone call the cops, the Forester is faster!! The world is gonna end.... [/sarcasm]

Sorry, but it's really not a big deal that the Forester 2.5XT is marginally faster in a straight line than a WRX. As you probably know, the WRX is more than just one-sided, as in, it can take turns. I wouldn't dare try some of the turns I take in the WRX in a mini-SUV.

Oh, and the Toyota Sienna minivan is comparable to a 2.5RS in straight line performance, so you best watch out for those too

I think the Forrester is pretty hot. I really like the look - specially silver XT .. oohh baby. The hood scoop is great.

And TECHNICALLY, the Impreza does still have a faster model - the STi. And the above is correct, the WRX is a better handler. I love it and couldn't be happier with my car

Hmmm, where to begin?

1. Your WRX isn't Subaru's rally car. The WRC Impreza is.
2. The XT has a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, essentially the same one in the STi. This motor makes more torque than the WRX's, by about 20 lb-ft
3. The list of cars that are faster than the WRX is rather long. Why not add the Forester to it?
4. The Forester XT looks better than any WRX, particularly in silver. Were it not for the upcoming Legacy turbo wagon, I would already have an XT.
5. With its low center of gravity and wide stance, the Forester XT is but a few suspension mods away from outhandling a WRX, in addition to outrunning it up to about 90 mph.
6.

The STi is still quicker I believe, and it is in the Impreza line.

hahah the Wrx got ow3d by a wagon

Com'on what did you expect? it's a 2.5L Turbo engine.. and a Wrx is a 2.0L turbo... the engine in the turbo forester is just about has close to a stock STi engine as you can get...

I figure they will start soon.. This is the First Turbo Forester we have..

But I can't forsee us getting any STi Forester anytime soon unless Foresters fly off the floors in crazy amounts... Which wont happen.

Default The guy does have a point..

It is a valid point of contention. The WRX is marketed as a performance vehicle in subarus line up where as you could hardly say the same for the forester, and now we also hear talk that perhaps the numbers (on paper) for the XT are undervalued, which makes one believe that Subaru is definitely trying to promote the WRX as a more capable (read: powerful) vehicle. So I can understand why some people who aren't as clued up as some of us could be annoyed by discovering this fact.

So I understand where he's coming from, but having said that, I still thought it was pretty cool when some of those XT numbers came back from the magazine tests. What a nice little surprise that was!

BTW. I see the usual suspects have come out to make fun of the "newbie" post. Too many members of this board are starting to take on some elitist qualities that are getting really quite tiresome.

If you look at the WRX's marketing, it was never pushed as the ultimate in speed and handling in the Subaru lineup. Has Subaru touted its speed? Yes. Have they shown the car doing fun stuff in the dirt? Yes. But nowhere has Subaru said, tacitly or otherwise, "This is the fastest car we make. Nothing else compares."

Therefore, to howl about Subaru's somehow betraying WRX owners by "making the Forester faster" is misguided. Subaru has long known that the Forester was underpowered. By giving some buyers the option of the low-pressure 2.5-liter turbo, a move that is also cost-efficient as the company moves toward using the same motor across much of its performance line (the Legacy turbo will also have the 2.5-liter turbo...that car, too, will be faster than the WRX), Subaru simply opens up the Forester lineup for more potential owners who might think 165hp isn't sufficient.

The two cars are marketed in very different ways. When you see a Forester XT commercial, the power is touted as being just the thing to get you out of trouble in passing situations, etc.

At the track, or at the rallycross, stock for stock, the WRX would have the XT's number. The XT is also faster up to about 90 mph, at which point the WRX seems to have better pull. This makes sense, because of the XT's small turbo and low boost pressure.

They are two different cars, aimed at two different groups of people. I think that we were all surprised by the Car & Driver numbers, though to date, nobody has been able to duplicate them. As regards the underreported horsepower ratings, who knows. Different dynos have been known to give different numbers. As I recall from the thread, the XT numbers were estimated, rather than hard and fast (no pun intended) values. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

What's also interesting is that in Japan, the Impreza is the spike-haired wild child, while the Legacy is the flagship for Subaru, the car that WRX owners aspire to. It's only in the U.S., where the WRX is fairly new, that this relationship is skewed. Subaru is, it seems, about to make that right with the introduction of the new Legacy lineup which, btw, is very impressive. The new cars' extensive use of aluminum mean that we should get cars that weigh about as much as the current WRX but with more horsepower and torque, in a larger, more luxurious package. Horsepower numbers being bandied about are anything from 250-280, depending on what rumor you believe.

I have a WRX wagon, and it's a fast, fun car. I have never considered it the ne plus ultra, however. It is, however, a very quick car in all conditions, something which can be a lot of fun. That something else is faster in some aspects of performance in no way diminishes my delight, every time I drive my WRX.

The Forester XT has an awesome engine, no doubt - but oddly, when I sit in one, I can't seem to get the seating position such that my knees aren't hitting the wheel - sort of odd, because I don't have that problem in the WRX.

We'll probably get another Subie soon (well... in a few years when the warranty on my wife's car runs out) - it'll be a Legacy, though - and probably not the fun one the new Legacy looks pretty sweet, though!

Why worry about new product after you buy a car? The basic WRX was the fastest subie for 2 years or so in the US, now it's probably 3rd for off the line speed, 2nd for handling/overall package - in a couple of years it'll be even lower on the totem pole (when the new Legacy gets here, and if they do an STi Forester) I am sort of curious if the next redesign of the Impreza stays with the 2L or moves up to the Forester engine...

There is no replacement for displacement.

If I were in the market for a new car now, I'd almost certainly have the Forester XT at the top of my list. I think the redesigned body style is sexy. Plus it has the same shortblock as the STi for a couple grand less. As I understand it, most Impreza parts will swap into the Forester since they share a common chasis. Just think of the sleeper you could build.

And this coming from someone who hates SUVs and cute-utes.

Actually, overseas, the Legacy Turbo has been quite a bit "faster" than the WRX for a long while now

Who buys these cars to drive in a straight line anyway?

Some people have run the two side-by-side, others previously owned a WRX, and moved into an XT, which lacks the turbo lag of the WRX. Mash the throttle, and it just goes. But the engine tuning and boost mean that it runs out of steam at the upper limits of its rev range.

My thoughts exactly. When my son asks me if my STI is faster than some other car my response is the same. If you equate Subaru (WRX) or STI with speed (or horse power) your missing the point of what the car is about. It's about speed with agility. I doubt the forester or the upcoming legacy can match it on both dimensions.

True, but it has 235lb-ft of torque at, what, 3600RPM. With that much torque, all the "low" horsepower number means that it revs lower, and/or, there is room for improvement in the tuning.
