Hey guys,
I'm trying to plan a road trip up the sonoma coast, seeing as how I've never really been up there much. I am having a hard time trying to figure out what roads exactly Id like to take. Id like to hit some of the backroads up there... A while ago, I remember there was a northern cruise trip which people from here particpated in. Could you give me an idea of what roads you took, and any changes youd make if you were to do it again? Thanks -Jason

Hmmm...I do a lot of driving up the coast North of San Francisco.
Here is a good 95 mile loop called the Marin Loop and I have added notes for a side trip out to the Point Reyes Light House for some sites. The Marin Loop has some very tight turns, hairpins, ext. The added Point Reyes side trip allows you to open up. Point Reyes (roads have passing lanes, a few straights, big sweeps, very very little traffic) I just did this trip last weekend. When you get to Pt. Reyes Station (a very small town with a stop sign ) take a left out towards Pt. Reyes. Just follow the signs. There are a couple of small towns in the beginning. I think two and there are only two stop signs for the next 40 miles. This road has some hills, some sweeping turns, and is more high speed then any part of the Marin Loop. It allows you to open up a little. There is very little traffic. ![]() When you get to the light house you can't go any farther . It is worth walking down the steps cut into the rock to the very tip and into the lighthouse. It is one of the windest spots in the US. There is a light house museum there.OH - watch out for COWs!!!! Also you can stop at the Oyster Farm and get fresh Oysters half way out to the light house there is a sign for the Oyster Farm. Check out this Link for the FULL Marin Loop Drive, minus my Pt. Reyes side trip. http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/MarinCounty.htm I suggest getting a map of the area before taking off. |

I went on the Marin Loop 2 times this past summer. Great drive, about 6 hrs long with a couple stops for pics.
There are LOTS of bikers in some rural areas. On one section, I let my cousin take over the driving and he got a ticket from a motorcycle cop... |

The only place you would see a motorcycle cop is on HWY 1 - just a guess.
I have never seen them on the Pt. Reyes run either, since it is a National Wilderness Land, only rangers. I have never seen them on the Bolinas-Fairfax road, not enought traffic and two windy. I would suggest keep the speeds on HWY 1, but most of the loop is back roads. ![]() |

No, he didn't get the ticket on HWY 1. It was on the 2nd part of the loop, the backroads section. Kinda close to the Cheesecake factory area.
