I can't believe that I thought it meant something great.
Impreza in English is 'you have way too much time on your hands'. I would have never guessed.

(if I didn't say it someone else would have)

According to Subaru, "Impreza" means "To make your mark" The Impreza was the car that was going to "Make Subaru's mark" in the mainstream automotive world instead of being known as the company that was about as far away from the mainstream as one could get at the time.

It's a latin word, translation is "enterprise". Imprezza in Italian, means the same i.e. a business enterprise. Considering how they go warp speed - the Star Trek NCC-1701 Enterprise comes to mind.

You shouldn't really expect Japanese product's names to have Japanese names, because in Japan most of the product's names are in english, latin whatever thats not Japanese. Well except for like company names like Honda, Toyota, Suzuki, Fuji, and stuff.

According to a Japanese version Impreza booklet from Subaru, "Impreza" is a coined word. The origin of the word Impreza is an English word impresa, which means a crest and/or a maxim. (However, I tried several English-English and English-Japanese dictionaries to look up this word, "impresa" I couldn't find it... uhmmm...). Moreover, and same time, Subaru wanted to add a new "impression" of youth, nimble, and sporty image to their traditional technology base of "boxer engine" and "4WD" for a new era. Therefore, name "Impreza" that is coined from impresa and impression was given to our cars.
Did this help you?? Hopefully my translation works OK for you.

I thought the SOJ took IMPREZA from the spelling, IMPREZZA. If you can find out what that word means, than you got it.

"Subaru" is the Japanese word for the constellation Pleiades. Notice the constellation logo. Nifty, eh?

Question

Porter, you sure?

I was reading a (brief) history of Fuji Heavy Industries. The article mentioned that when FHI split up to cover different markets (i.e. auto engines, air planes, etc...), the automotive faction was called "Subaru" which means "unite."

This is all according to a "glossy" that Subaru put out in conjuction with Road & Track (or maybe Car & Driver?).

I'll double check though.

...my car still needs a good washing!

Jonathan-

I think you are correct, "subaru" used conversationally does mean "unite," I believe that is why the constellation is called Subaru. Seven major stars (actually between 400 and 500 total) united in one cluster. The name is rather clever.

The star badge on the grille is a picture of the Pleiades, it cannot be mistaken.

Actually, the constellation Pleiades is IN the constellation Taurus, but is considered separate. The funny thing is that a person with very good eyesight can see seven stars instead of six, so the six stars badge is technically a little off.

And the star from the constellation that got used as a car name was Alcyone, for the SVX.

If i remember correctly, Alcyone is the brightest star of the constalation... And the reason for six stars, is that it looks like 5 small stars and one big one... And 6 matches the 6 "brothers" of FHI.
