Post Electrical Problem: Power gone, dash gone

Hmm...quite the interesting problem has arose. The power windows don't work, and either does the heater/AC or the dash. Tne tach, speed, fuel, temp guages are all froze. The car also will not go above about 3500K.

I have never experienced this before, and have tried everything I could think of. Feeling somewhat dumbfounded.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I had a similar problem, but not as drastic as yours. I had a '89 Accord and one day, the radio, AC, heater, and fan stopped working (basically the whole dash besides the gauges). It turned out I had a burned up ignition harness (I'm talking about the wires that sit inside of the steering column and distribute power from battery/ignition to various accessaries), and I had to get a new harness.

I don't know why your car doesn't rev up beyond 3500rpm. By the way, how do you know that when you said the tach froze also?

Hey, I seem to recall someone perhaps having similar simptoms a long time ago, and he posted all about it on the STi Mailing List. I think it was Kevin Thomas. That was before I was a member here, so maybe it was covered here as well. I don't think it was anything real major or expensive, but I can't remember what it was.

hmm. When I pulled my friend's trailer with my Jeep it sparked really bad when we plugged the electrical in, but nothing seemed to be wrong. Then we drove for two hours, parked it overnight, drove another twenty minutes, parked again for an hour, and went to leave. When we were leaving my dash started making a funny noise, and it went away when we unplugged the battery in the trailer. When I got home I took it to the Dealer to see what it was. No clue, but they found a fuse underneath(?) the fuse box that had blown. It was like a 50amp fuse. Everything in the car worked fine...

So my point. Maybe it's something hidden someplace that you wouldn't think to look.

Yeah, that's about right.

You have a big fat short somewhere in the system. Disconnect stuff until the problem goes away, then you've found the guilty party. Check all the main power supply routing cables, including alternator cables.

The car not going above 3500rpm is due to the limp-home feature of the ECU. Basically the short scrambled its brains, and the ECU went into limp-home mode and will stay that way until reset.

Hey, no wonder you were up so late, Chris. Bummer! Hope it all gets worked out for you. You're one of the first Legacies I've heard of to have issues of that sort.

Maybe it was upset that you took all those cool parts off it, and sold 'em to some guy in Illinois
