Post Red Light Camera ??

Yesterday in the mail I received a little present from DC MVA. A ticket for running a red light with a picture of my car. The fine is $75. However i know the exact day this happened, (i went to the auto show) I dont remember running any red lights that day. In the pictures you see my car already with both tires across the line where the intersection begins, and then the next picture im already on the other side. Also in both pictures you cannot see what color the light is. I dont see how this is proof that i ran the light. Any chance I can get out of this? What should I do?

In the area I live in the city is installing red light cameras in one key location, must be the only light people choose to run, anyway I heard that this camera has a sensor which, and I assume all of them do,senses the car as it passes through the light and snaps the picture. What I'm wondering is, if you pull to far past the white line could it possibly snap a picture?

DON'T PAY THE TICKET!!!

Here in Phoenix they have red light cameras and only about 50% of the tickets get paid. Why? Because unless the letter is sent Certified mail they can not prove that you ever received the ticket! If you do receive it certified, just don't accept the letter.

They won't go after you.

Can they prove it was you driving the car? I would think that if the ticket doesn't clearly show you, then you could also fight it from that aspect. If your friend drives your car, and gets pulled over for speeding, you don't have to pay for it. So why should you have to pay if he runs a red light? Prove it was you doing it : p

Dude.. think about parking tickets. They go to the owner of the vehicle. Up here if you don't pay the ticket (even if you don't know you got a ticket because your "friend" didn't tell you, or somebody took it off, etc.) you'll have some serious trouble getting your registration/license renewed. Furthermore the fines add up bigtime. Pay it. Since they can't proove it was you it might not go on your record as a moving violation, but I'd check about that.

Here's a little trick my friend told me, don't know if it works.

Let's say you got a ticket for speeding. No way to get out of it. So you decide to pay it and suffer. I've heard that if you over-pay by a dollar or so they can't close out your account. They can't go after you for anything, but they also can't put it on your record either.

Just a suggestion

These cameras are spreading all over. The worst part is that they basically are paving the way for GATSO's (ask the U.K. people)

I found this thing that you put over your license plate which looks normal but when the camera takes a picture it is blurred.

PHOTO RADAR
How does "THE PROTECTOR" work? Photo radar operates at known angles to the direction of traffic flow. Using a passive, state-of-the-art light-bending lens, the camera is unable to identify your vehicle. A 5- minute installation is all that is required. Note that the license plate is still completely readable from straight on.

Oh yes, I got a ticket for one of those covers last year They are illegal (in Arizona Anyway) and it was a $90 fine!!!

The only reason they are allowed to sell them is because you can say that the vehicle is only going to be used on private property..yeah right

Well i will try to post the picture but i dont have access to a scanner right now.

Do you really think it would work if i claimed i never got the letter? it came in the regular mail.

Since they cant prove who was driving, no points will go on my license and it wont effect my insurance. But if i say i wasnt the driver, i have to give them the name of the driver. And i guess they send them the ticket. If i dont pay in 2 weeks the fine is $150. I think im just gonna pay it since i would have to miss a day of work to go to court, and that would end up costing me more anyways. Oh well, It sucks!

Thanks for the replies.

Sorry to hear about your ticket mate.. ..here in Australia, cameras are a part of life now. We have red light cameras, temporary speed cameras, fixed speed cameras, and mobile speed cameras, and most of them are digital...they get your pic, then straight to the computer..a ticket can be issued even before you get home..minutes after getting your pic taken. Just be aware of where they are..and be careful.

Here in california those tickets are so damn expensive. They are atleast 300+ and we also have a ton of them every where. Take of your front license plate, I don't think they can send you a ticket if you have it off.

You should probably fight it, just because if someone doesnt start to stand up for themselves, then they (big brother) will assume they are right. Remember, innocent until proven guilty. If they can't prove it was you, they cant give you a fine or make you pay, or take your points. It as simple as that. Thats why in Arizona, where we have more "Camera Cops" per capita then anywhere, they are now requiring that not only do they have to prove you received the ticket, IE: registered letter or hand delivered, they also have to prove it was you driving. Their are alot of people who have found ways around this, mainly because it is a chicken-s@%t way to generate revenue. Here is the latest trick, register your car in the name of your wife only, or some other loved one, when they get the letter for the ticket, have them sign it, show up for court, and demand that they show the picture with their face. Obviously it won't be your wifes face, and she just has to say the car was getting warranty work that day.

I actually heard that from an acquantence of mine who is a Phoenix city police officer.

This is why you run without license plates. Get popped for that and it's only a fix-it ticket and if you carry the plate (rear) with you chance's are good if you get pulled over that if you say "it was about to fall off and I'm going to get new bolts right now" the cop will just let you go anyway. I do it here in so cal and it works.

Blah, we are starting to get those red light camera's here in washington too. Fortunatly we dont have the strict no roll through on yellow laws like Cali, and other states do.

When i was over in Australia a couple years back, some friends of mine got cought in a red light camera...needles to say, rolling through an intersection, and suddenly *FLASH* is a rather unsettling fealing.

Oh well, i guess they can be justified that by doing this they have more officers on the street doing their jobs. Or how they need the extra revenue from this to keep our streets safe, or some other BS.

I think "the man" needs to take a brake and just do their jobs in the first place.

I got one of these a while back. all u have to do is not respond to the ticket. this has been about 1 year ago and still nothing yet. but i have a tip for everyone on the BB. go out and buy this book "BEAT THE COPS. THE GUIDE TO FIGHTING YOUR TRAFFIC TICKET AND WINNING." by Alex Carrol. i forget how much it cost but it is a purple book with yellow writing. there is a whole chapter about photo radar and how to fight it. if the ticket isnt sent out via certified mail theres no way to prove u received it. also another thing u can do is sue for invasion of privacy. the book stated that many people have done this and won. in ur case they sent the pictures with ur notice, usually they dont, so u can sue. i dont want to ramble on, just go get the book and win every ticket u get. it really works. later,

Jose

I got one of those photo red light tix in DC in September. P*ss*d me off royally. I'm surprised they haven't sent my personal info off to JCWhitney et al. by now.

I wanted to buy one of those license plate covers but was concerned over their legality. Can anyone point us to a list of states (including AZ) in which they are illegal?

As to the 6th Amendment violations, I'd tend to agree but given the inclination of Federal courts these days winning the case would be a tough fight. Never thought I'd hear myself saying this but it looks like we all could use a good lawyer on this one.

damn that sucks...well with my experiances the best thing to do is just send in the fine..I KNOW it sucks and you believe you didnt do it...but going to court over it is just going to make more hassle for you and if you still lose(which is very likely) you will just have to pay the 75 PLUS the court costs...so its basicly not worth it....BUT...youc an screw um in another way..I have done this once and it worked so I believe it should work for you so you dont get the points on your lisence...pre-pay the ticket for like $85...send too much...then the computer sends out a refund check of the $10 back to you..however it doesnt process your points on your lisence till that check is cashed...get the check...rip it up...no points for you =) ha...good luck!
