Default CD changer input on Stock WRX head unit

I noticed that the stock WRX head unit has an additional connector on the back, which is likely for the add-on Subaru CD changer. Has anyone added the changer to this unit, thereby enabling a total of 12 CDs? Does it work?

More importantly, I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not this connector could be hijacked and used for other types of inputs, say an iPod.

Look at the connector here:

(the connector in question is on the lower left)

There appears to be eight pins. Four of these would likely be the line in. The other four would likely control a trigger and logic for communication between the changer and head unit.

Anybody have a wiring schematic for either the stock head unit or the add-on CD changer? If we had more info, it should be possible to hijack this connector and use it for various line-in applications.

thanks!
Craig

This has been discussed in the past. If you do a way-back search in this forum some threads should come up. IIRC nobody ever figured out a ways to use that connector.

With the WRX head unit, I think that is only for the subwoofer.
I haven't seen an add in remote CD changer for the stock unit.
If there were, there would be a way to use that connector for other stuff.
As it is, it would appear to be output only.

The factory sub is connected externally with a harness adapter and uses the rear speaker outputs, it does not connect directly to the HU. FYI this is why you can replace the HU with an aftermarket one and still use the sub.
There is no optional external changer offered. However the speculation is that since the HU is manufactured by Matsushlta, the same unit may be used in other applications where an external device would be connected to the extra plug. Any data link used would be proprietary so it's highly unlikely you could do anything else with it.
