My palms just started sweating. Not sure if it was the WRX pic, or the idea of racing an '02 . . .

Having done SOLO II, it is hard to imagine risking my paint/mods on some other nimnut's ability to hold a corner. I think racing a $4,000 bike may be a little different (financially speaking) than racing a $25,000 car.

Would it be safe? Heck, just slap me if I am overcautious . I've never met an onramp/offramp I didn't like, I've just never had to share them . . .

Needles to say, this series also made names like Doug Polan and Kevin Shwantz household names ALL over the world.
The big "thing" we will have to fight in the Suby community would be "TALK". Seems that there is a BUNCH of people that would rather talk about it than actually DO it.
The old saying says: "Talk is cheap, money buys the whiskey!!" But to EXPERIENCE the whiskey, you HAVE to DRINK it!! You can talk about the aroma, and how it must taste wonderful, how the oak flavor surely must be noticeable. But unless you take a taste of it you will NEVER know for SURE, and all you will EVER do is speculate.
I think under the present circumstances, to wait for SOA to do something like this will be fugal. We have to SHOW interest by competing in local autox’s in BIG numbers, to show the corporate people that there is a possibility of an “IMPREZA - CUP” series to be successful. I picked autox as the focal point, because unlike drag racing you do HAVE to make turns. But it is also the second most popular participant auto sport in the nation!! Even higher that dirt/oval track racing, and beaten out only by drag racing! Hey, maybe we could do like the old AMA Nat. championship series. In order for you to be declared the Impreza Cup Champion, you would have to have competed in all forms of racing with your car, Road Racing, Rallying, AutoX, and Drag Racing! In fact, we could make the Cobb Tuning cup in the “One Lap” the first Impreza Cup, since the one lap covers almost all of the “styles”. We can have a couple of Impreza only rally stages at the conclusion of the one lap. How about calling it the Cobb Tuning Impi (Zulu for warrior) Cup

What do y’all think?

Wow Andre,

I didn't think anyone here but me would know those names. I actually raced in a race with Polan at Riverside once. He showed me how to dirt track & take the S's in a straight line (if you ever saw Riverside you will know what I am talking about). Let me just say he was impresive.

Now back to the issue:
Here in SoCal if we could get enough Impreza owners together, I know a race promoter that has the ability to hold races anywhere in the US. Big problem is finding the land to hold these events on. Government/public land is too hard to get permission to use (need environmental studies and all). Best bet is privately owned land where you can work out an agreement with owner to hold the event.

Just a little more food for thought.

I think a Subaru series (not just Impreza) would be a great idea. Personally, I'd vote for a rally cross. It could really show the strengths of the cars, but not have a lot of potential for damage. Although I do drag race my Impreza once in a while, it's not really suited to it. Auto cross is cool to, but I really want to see rally get more popular in the states.

PS: Oh, and I'd go. I'm running in the rallycross next weekend in Prescott.

PPS: I'm also planning a couple of web activities to encourage rally racing. I'd like to hear some ideas if you guys have any for rally & rallycross web sites.

Dante,

You should send a message to Bill Barfoot. He's the coordinator of the Prescott Forest Rally. (Look for his E-mail link on www.prescottforestrally.com and tell him Bud sent you). He's talking about starting a rally cross series in AZ. You two might be able to do a little horse-trading. I plan to get involved as time allows. I also plan to put up a couple of web sites (again when time allows). BTW: Have you heard the rumor that The David Richards (chairman of Prodrive) bought the media rights to the WRC? I think Rally might just get more a little popular in the next couple of years.

Turk,

Auto-X is pretty well covered by the SCCA and a few other clubs (in AZ, I can't speak for nationally). I'm not sure there's a need for more amature or club auto-x. It's good to have a race-friendly web site though.

Cool Something fo Interest of all!!

How many of you remember the Suzuki GSXR Cup Series in the late 1980's?!? Well in case you don't remember or even know about it, the GSXR Cup Series helped Suzuki go right to the forefront of the performance motorcycle business for years, and to some extent they are still living off that legacy today 14 years later. The GSXR cup series was open to anyone (that's anyone) that owned and wanted to race their Suzuki GSXR motorcycle. Suzuki held local, regional & national races and the best part was your bike had to remain basically stock (with the exception of safety mods).

Could you imagine the marketing stronghold a company like Subaru could possibly obtain if they were to devise and implement such a race series. Now I know that the GSXR was only a $4500 investment at the time that Suzuki ran their series (since I went out and bought one), but there are enough enthusiasts spending an additional $10,000+ on their Hondas, Acuras, Nissans etc. out their to warrant at least considering such an event series. Think about it, Subaru could create an Impreza Series with a 2.2L stock class, 2.5RS class & a WRX class. An avid race enthusiast could get started for under $10K on the low end with a used Impreza plus safety mods or spend upwards of $30K plus for a new WRX with safety mods. Subaru's AWD system makes this vehicle the perfect choice to design such a race event series around. With the growing popularity of rally racing here in the US this just seams to make sense.

In countries like Australia & New Zealand Subaru has a tremendous following with a much younger generation then they do here in the US. If Subaru is looking to tap into a younger market here in the US they should strongly consider what I am proposing here.

Hook it up! I'd be one of the first to work out working only 2-3 days a week with my job to go to all the races.

Hmm, well I might just be able to get a 1/2 way decent place to do one in New Mexico. Our Family Ranch has more than a few miles of semi maintained dirt roads, that if doen before the rainy season are basicly normal dirt raods. During and after the rains I think a old brat or other 4wd Subie(not awd) would be the best suited to the HUGE ruts and slick as ice mud.

I think having a Subaru Racing series would be a great idea. But make sure to include the other Folks, say with a Legacy,Forester, SVX/XT/XT6, and Other class so anyone can race. Also the In the yearly SHO conventions, they do a stock class and a modified class, so that might be important.
