Default 96 2.2 impreza

Hey i'm about to buy a 96 impreza lx with the 2.2. i know it's not that fast of a car but i wanna know what kind of mods i can do to it and where to find parts. also i have a safc left over from my old car i was wondering if that would help much in this car. With basic mods like intake exhaust and the safc what can i expect to run in the quater? thanks also any tuning advice would really be appreciated besides just someone say go turbo or supercharge it.

Its never going to be much of a quarter mile car with the normal power upgrades. If you change your goal you can be much happier by making the car handle really well. It'll cost less money, be more successful and make you a better driver too.

Ain't nothing wrong with a slow 2.2!!! Still a blast to drive! Just get a bigger sway bar before anything else!

As for parts, I find my best resource is the classifieds on here....I've purchased almost EVERYTHING for my car from people on here.

Dancin nanner for another 2.2 owner!!!

From what I have heard the block is really strong, although after frequent use's of 50 shot I bet head gaskets go in a hurry if not something worse. I could be wrong but all in all it's a pretty good motor. I have a buddy with a 98 OBS and that thing takes a beating from him and he hasn't had but a header gasket go on him. Oh, and foglights breaking on him..lol.

edit: Back to your original post; Your 96 2.2 isn't really a drag strip car. Probably will never be either unless you do a wrx engine and tranny swap. Plenty of exhaust and suspension pieces though to make the car very enjoyable in the twisties

I ran a blistering 16.8 in the 1/4 with a 97 MT with snorkus ectomy, WRX exhaust and light crank pulley, and 15" light wheels.
I have heard of 16 flat with SAFC and 100 octane gas.
Your LX is auto right? and down about 5 ponies. Be happy if you can go sub 18 seconds.
Kevin Thomas ran nitrous and a turbo for many passes and the engine was still OK. The HG seems good up to about 6 psi for some time. After a while it will fail too.

There is not too much out there for go fast bits. If you have dual exhaust ports you can get some better headers that may help a little.
Seriously, if you want power save all your money and do the WRX swap instead of fiddling with the 2.2l. You could spend $2000 to get 10hp or $6000 to get 100hp. You decide what's better for you.
