Question Baja-T or SVT Lightning

I'm leaning more towards the Lightning right now... what are your thoughts?

Lightning Pros
Rare, decent resale value
V8 sound/power
Easy to mod
Big bed

Lightning Cons
Scary gas mileage
RWD with 295/18's = no winter fun

-----------------------------------------

Baja Pros
Easy to mod motor
More affordable (around $6-7k cheaper)
Subaru AWD = winter fun

Baja Cons
Will the tranny last?
Crappy resale (especially since nobody even wants new ones)
Slower than Lightning
Small bed

you forgot 2 extra seats for the baja, and much better interior/build quality IMO

Actually, the Baja only has one more belt than a bench seat equipped Lightning.

If it will be your only vehicle, I say get the baja. If this will be your 2nd vehicle, or pleasure vehicle, go for the lightning.

I own an '02 Lightning and an '04 STI.

The L is fast, comfortable, and can haul or tow a lot of stuff. It is not that bad in winter... it was my only car last winter (pretty bad one here in Pittsburgh). I put a set of 265/55R18 Dunlop Wintersport M2s on the stock wheels and a few plastic bins full of landscaping rocks over the rear axle and I got around fine. I would not call the handling "scary". I was impressed with the Wintersports over traditional soft snow tires.

What it won't do is turn corners like an STI. It is still a 4700lb truck. I tried lowering, etc... but the ride quality suffered too much (roads here suck).

Also, the L is fine accelerating on dry pavement. But, let's say, going up a wet hill you better not punch it... fishtail city. The STI is great in all conditions. It just can't haul much stuff and it's not as comfortable for longer trips.

If I had to have only one vehicle I'd consider the Baja-T, but I think the bed is too small for me. I considered the WRX wagon back when I bought the L, but I didn't like the lack of low-end torque. Today I'd probably buy an STI and also swing a beater pickup. Or maybe tow a 4x8 utility trailer.

Default Lightning

Go with the lightning hands down.

I own a baja and while it is a GREAT car, probably the best car purchase I have made, it is boring compared to the lightning.

Winter will be a non issue if you put some sand bags in the back and take it easy.

Interior in the lightning is so much nicer.

If you wait till the Dodge SRT-10 hits the market, the used lightnings may depreciate some, since they'll be no longer the fastest truck on the market. I didn't know if you were going used or new.

If you want a new lightning, you'll need to get one by the end of the 2004 model run, as there will be no 2005 lightning (or SVT focus or cobra for that matter)

A closer comparison may be the new Chevy Colorado. Avaialable in four door with the new I-5 engine and 4WD. HP is a little higher than Baja-T, but as a comparison vehicle, could be a little closer to what Baja customers are looking for. Prices are supposed to be real reasonable, and towing capacity is higher, even if they did lower it from the S-10 spec.

Just a thought.
