Where I live (around Allentown) it seems like I can't go one mile without seeing atleast one Outback or Legacy. Sometimes this is broken up by an occasional Impreza. But why is nobody driving the RS? It's almost sickening how many outbacks I see. I see more of them than I do Civics.

The RS is a fairly limited production car that only dates back to 1998. There have not been many made - I believe fewer than 5000 per year 1998 and 1999. There is more production for MY00, but it is still very limited. Let's keep it that way too! I love having a unique car. As far as Outbacks and Legacys (old GLs too), they might as well be the Colorado "state car"! They are everywhere here, but that makes sense because of our inclement weather and the large number of people here that ski, bike, hike and four wheel. Also because they are so reliable and rugged!

Don't forget, the Outback saved SOA's butt. The more of those they sell, the more 'fun' money they have for the good stuff (hopefully).

Pretty simple, really. The Outback/Legacy is a family car, the 2.5RS is not. There are a heckuva lot more people looking for family cars than there are people looking for a small, semi-sporty compact (hence the reason the Camry, Accord, and Taurus always battle it out for the best selling car, vice the ITR, 2.5RS, and Celica).
Pat Olsen '99 Legacy 2.5GT 5speed sedan PS - I'm not a family man, I just already have a sports car. The Legacy is my "civilized" car - which is why I open track and auto-x in it. ![]() |

The reason I bought an RS was because my wife's '96 Outback is so good. It's fun to drive, rooomy and dead reliable. We've had only 1 minor oil leak in more than 4 years and 50,000 miles. I do all the maintenance myself, and it's only seen a dealer once, for the leak - fixed on warranty. I even got several laps on the Buttonwillow track. How many station wagons can you four-wheel drift thru the decreasing radius last turn? My only dissapointment is the gas mileage, usually about 20, in mixed driving. My RS does better than 24 on most tanks, a pleasant surprise! Here is LA you see more Ferrari's and Porsches than RS's but the Outbacks are taking over for people who don't need a huge suv, and who really does?

yup, like richeich said, if there were no outbacks or legacies, we probably wouldn't be getting the impreza turbo. heck, maybe subaru would have pulled out of the north american market.
plus they need to make cars that all of us can drive when we get older, i.e. Legacy GT wagon H6 *drool*... |

Its just freakin allentown and bethlehem... Faulkner is one of the top subaru dealerships in the country or so they claim, and that's y they get so many RSs. Becker is the dealer that's recommended by the internet sites for around us... I mean go to there lots, ITS just covered with outbacks. Becker has 6 RSs Faulkner 3 it suxs, but i like them being rare. But you are right, they are EVERYWHERE i didn't really notice till i got my RS.

What's wrong with Outbacks? I have a 97'Outback Legacy Limited. We have 2 kids and it hauls a lot of stuff, is reliable plus it gets good gas mileage. Better than driving around in a huge gas sucking SUV don't you think.
Not as fun to drive as my RS but it serves a good purpose for me ![]() |
