Default "skin" canceled, oh and boomtown too.

Fox cancels 'Skin' after three airings
NBC nixes 'Boomtown'
Wednesday, November 5, 2003 Posted: 9:01 AM EST (1401 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Fox has canceled prolific producer Jerry Bruckheimer's new series "Skin" after three low-rated airings.

Meanwhile, NBC has officially pulled the plug on the critically praised sophomore drama "Boomtown."

"Skin," Fox's "Romeo and Juliet"-esque serial drama set in the world of Los Angeles' adult entertainment industry, shut down production Tuesday after completing eight episodes.

Fox will run back-to-back original episodes of "The Next Joe Millionaire" at 8 and 9 p.m. Monday for the next two weeks, leading into the two-hour "Millionaire" finale November 24.

Meanwhile, "The O.C." will return to its original Thursday 9 p.m. time slot -- sort of. Fox has slated encore airings of its hot new teen soap on Thursday for the remaining three weeks of the sweep in addition to original episodes in the series' new slot at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Despite the massive promotion "Skin" received during Fox's highly rated postseason baseball telecasts as well as mostly positive reviews, the Ron Silver starrer opened to a disappointing 6.3 million viewers and a 2.7 rating/6 share among adults 18-49. It most recently averaged 4.1 million viewers and a 1.8/4 in adults 18-49, beaten by the WB Network's "Everwood" in total viewers by 1.4 million viewers and tying "Everwood" and UPN's comedies in 18-49.

The cancellation of the character-driven "Skin" marks the first series demise for Bruckheimer, who has been on a roll with such hits as CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "CSI: Miami," "Without a Trace" and, most recently, "Cold Case."

The cancellation of the Peabody Award-winning "Boomtown" was expected after NBC first benched the show two weeks into the season and then moved "Third Watch" from Monday to "Boomtown's" Friday 10 p.m. slot.

"Third Watch" had a strong premiere on Friday last week, handily winning the time slot in the 18-49 demographic, while "Boomtown" trailed CBS' "The Handler" and ABC's "20/20" in its most recent outing.

Production on "Boomtown," which was on hiatus, will not resume. Six episodes were filmed, with two making it to air.

I find this funny... basically its all cop shows... so bruckheimer tries a different genre and flops. Way to go...

I would have watched the last 2 "Skins" if it wasn't at 9ET Monday. "Everwood" is my must-watch at that time spot.

i am pissed about Boomtown!

i liked that show.. they never had it in a good time slot and moved it around a bunch of times... it would be cool if a channel like FX picked it up.. it could be so much better with a little edge to it. i think people just didn't like the way the show told a story from different perspectives... *too hard to follow*, morons

ditto. I liked it as well. I thought it was a fresh, new way to tell a story.

Skin was a good show too although I couldn't really see where the show was going. They pretty much wrapped the whole season into the first show. after that I was like "now what the hell can they do with this show?"

What do they do with shows that are taped, but not aired?

yeah, and it wasn't even anything remotely great.

"oh wow, a (bad) teeny bopper romeo and juliet story of feuding houses, with some cut aways to strip clubs..."

yeah, REAL exciting...

Honestly, it wont really bother me too much, but I really liked that show. Two episodes in and they can it.

I just don't see how much feeback they can get after only two shows.

Heck, Seinfeld (I know it's a sitcom, not a drama) wasn't a hit until it's third season!

They need to give these things more of a chance. Especially since they have already filmed the future episodeas anyways.

skin would have been a great show if it wasn't for the stupid kid romance. the rest of the plot was good.

I'm wicked pissed about Boomtown. awesome show. that lawyer guy is great. that's all I got.

This is why I only watch Simpsons reruns, Sportscenter, and the gearhead stuff on Discovery. TV sucks now.

Saw the first episode of Skin and I thought it was alright, just hard to watch in that timeslot, also they keep juggling programs from night to night. Back when Bernie Mac was on Wednesdays I'd always watch it, then I'd watch Cedric and then Fastlane, when they moved them to Friday that killed it for me.

Wasn't "Skin" supposed to be a modern version of Romeo & Juliet? We know what happened THERE!!!

BTW, didn't the Nextel commercial did the whole R&J story in 15 seconds? At least this one lasted 3 episodes.
