Unhappy Random limp mode? Front 02 sensor going bad?

I was driving home tonight, and everything was fine when I started, but about 7 miles into my drive I noticed some hesitation. Acceleration was very sluggish and it sounded like my intake was way too loud at low RPMs. I downshifted and it felt like I hit the rev limiter at 4k RPMs. I popped it into neutral and tried to rev, but the same thing happened, it felt like a rev limiter. I drove a few more miles like this, then sat at a stoplight for maybe 2 minutes when I got into my town. I pulled out of the stoplight and all the hesitation was gone.

What's up with my car? Is my front 02 sensor going bad? I have a constant CEL because my rear 02 sensor isn't hooked up, but I didn't think that would throw the car into limp mode.

Anyone ever experience this?

Exact same thing happened this morning on my way to work. I started out and the car was in limp mode, felt like power was cut in half, wouldn't rev past 3.5-4k RPM. Around 5 miles into my commute it just picked the power back up and would rev the whole way to redline. How long can I drive it like this? Where can I order a new front 02 sensor?

how long? as long as you can stand it.

where? www.subaruparts.com

how much? about $95

Having the dealership do it? $200

You buying it, fixing it yourself in 20 minutes and having your car back to normal? Priceless.

A lot of us have gone through this with the damn o2 sensor:

Speedometer appears to be working normally, and I have just over 15,000 miles.

The problem started after I had my car in an exhaust shop to take care of some of my cat section fitment issues. They made a couple of cuts in my cat section and rewelded it. I know that one of the welds was made very close to the front 02 sensor. I'm thinking it got hosed from this somehow.

late response, I know, but I have the SAME problem with my 95 Impreza L. Won't rev over 4100RPM and is running really rich on fuel...o2 sensor is the culprit!

Update: I filled the tank with gas yesterday and now the problem is gone. All my power is back and the car sounds normal. I took it to Autozone and it's not throwing any codes related to the front 02 sensor.

Did I have a bad tank of gas?

Should there have been a code in the computer if it was going into limp mode?

Had to replace my front O2 at about 30k. Same exact symptoms, except mine would not drive at all. I pulled the electrical connector to the O2 sensor until I could replace it. I think that the car automatically substituted an average reading from the sensor when it didn't see it and rean fine for 3 days until I could get the part and replace it.

Replacing it yourself is pretty simple, although I had to run mine to get it hot so I could get it out...

ouchie, have good gloves....

AFter running it like that for several months. (I know, I know, but I was short on $ and trying to move, etc) It threw every code in the book EXCEPT the o2 sensor. I didn't really believe the board mechanics when they said it can go bad, but not bad enough to throw a code, but bad enough to mess up your driving conditions. I definitly believe them now.

That's what we all thought too. It was sporatic at first, and then got steadily worse. ECU reset helped it a little, and new plugs helped too, but it always came back. Mine got so bad that it started to backfire up front.

Thanks...I guess I'll change it when I get paid again. I definitely don't have the money right now.

I ran for a week with no O2 sensors at all....sure it was pig rich and sluggish but it never felt like I hit a rev limiter

SOA just reimbursed me for my sensor.
(can see my posts in http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho...threadid=422964 )
I think it listed around $87 w/tax. Thankfully the week before I'd gotten a 10% coupon for parts or service from the dealer.

The dealer had indicated it was a 3/36 warranty, but as Mass does emissions checking the warranty is 7/70 - same as Calif.

So, if you state does emissions checking and you have less than 70k then show the dealer the warranty book (which I didn't have and some nice person from SOA sent me one they had) and or contact SOA and have them contact your dealer to let them know the sensor falls under the 7/70.
