Post Aftermarket turbo vs. Insurance

Of the people here that have a non-factory turbo/supercharger on their cars, did you report it to your insurance company? I mean, I heard horror stories that if you don't report it and then you get into an accident, the turbo voids your insurance, which in turn pulls a whole bunch more legal crap... So what did you all do?

Have an agent you can discuss these type of things in the "what if" tense honestly *before* you buy anything.

Some nazi insurance companies won't cover you, but most would be happy to raise your premiums or sell you rider policies to cover the extras. If anything besides stock is covered, there is usually a specified dollar allowance. (For example, my allstate agent told me <$4000 worth of stereo stuff was fine for my last car. More than that, we need to talk.)

Anyway, have an agent you can talk to. And if you have Geico, don't even bother talking just SWITCH NOW.

Hmm... matter of fact, I do have Geico. They're about 50% cheaper than anywhere else I looked... but I agree, discuss the "what-ifs" with the insurance company before you get burned. And I just may have to ditch Geico in about a year... Wonder if Rallispec will offer insurance.

Next ticket you get in NJ, tell the officer you paid for part of his radar / laser gun.

IMO, most of the drivers here on the board are pretty safe. It's the other morons on the street that you have to be careful of.

I hope I don't have to report it! I'd be in trouble!

"Mr. Insurance agent, that bottle in my trunk is for intertainment purposes only! Honestly..."

From what Ive heard.... a turbo charger is considered "speed equipment" And will raise your rates. Somehow, I think you'll be better off than if the car originally came with one though. They only need to worry about one car, not a population. Basically Im expecting the turbo to negate the above 25 discount I just qualified for.

Your rolling the dice..... it will raise your rates but only if you were in an accident where an adjuster looked under your hood. I so think they would still have to honor the policy though.

When I was 20 with a clean driving record (well ok, I got rear-ended by an uninsured two years previous in mom's car) I drove a '92 Legacy L wagon. That was in '97. My insurance was $2200/year. I called Geico up and told them I had USAA and I paid $2200. The guy took my info, ran his figures, and told me he could sign me up right now for $400 a month. I said, "Dude, that's more than twice what I'm paying now." He said, "If you have a credit card I can get you signed up right now" again. Whatever. I hung up on his lame b*tt.
Never even considered calling them back. Try to get all sneaky with me. I'll show them.

Good lord - My insurance has never been above $1300 a year, and that's when I first started driving. My insurance for a MY 01 RS is about $900/yr. On my old car (a Subaru GT Hatchback) it was less than $500/yr. Why is yours so high???

I'm on State Farm BTW
