Default Consumer Reports Rates STI and WRX

Just got the new Consumer Reports. The love the STI and WRX but weren't so thrilled with the Evo. They actually liked the Ford Focus SVT over all with no explanation as to why. Still once again the STI/WRX wipes the Evo!

They've always liked the Focus for its soft ride.

First - oh yeah, my Focus rides better... and stops better.
But, that said, you can't rank these cars without owning them. I've lived with both, more than one Subie, and can say with certainty that the Subie is a better car. Period.

your focus stops better? I know for 04 the Impreza has 4 wheel discs with EBD so I'm guessing that improved the stopping power of the impreza immensely.

I read Consumer Reports religiously and the reviews they do on automobiles are very handy. For the last year they've really given the Ford Focus SVT top notch reviews. The only reason why they never seem to recommend it is because it isn't reliable enough...I'm not sure about the new issue though, the reliability may have gotten better since I last checked. The Ford Focus SVT seemed to score the highest out of all the small cars in all of their tests (braking, handling, acceleration, gas mileage, etc) yet the reliability was its one major downfall. With that said Consumer Reports also gives very good reviews on the entire Impreza lineup. Imprezas scored high in their tests, but one of the major downfalls was the gas mileage. They said for a car that size the gas mileage should be better, which I agree as well. On the other hand, Subies are AWD which of course will lower the gas mileage a bit. Consumer Reports also tend to score just about any Mitsubishi product low, I'm not sure why. A lot of people say for a Japanese auto maker Mitsubishi is a few years behind all the rest. Their reliability isn't the greatest and there aren't too many Mitsubishi products that score well in Consumer Reports.

Consumer Reports should stick to reviewing stuff they know about and leave cars alone. Their reviews are the worst I've ever seen.

I think the only reason they like the Focus is because they keep mistaking it for a Civic, and from the way they act, they seem to think Honda and Toyota walk on water and can do no wrong.

That's because Honda and Toyota build a damn-well screwed together car aimed squarely at the target demographic that consumer reports also caters to.

Be my guest... but a firm pedal, consistent stops, and no crappy ABS beats the jittery stops in my OBS any day.

I had the sony edition focus for 2years and here is my story. 1. The brakes sucks. 2. The paint sucks even worse than subaru.
3. All the damn recalls. 4. The transmission was sliping and leaking and they didn't want to replace the trani. 5. The rear shocks blew out in one month of purchase of the car. 6. The ride wasn't all that. 7. It handles good. 8. The leather seats stitching was tearing the leather, & they did not want to replace the leather covers. 9. Very thin door skins and qt pannels lots of dings and chips. 10. I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER FORD AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

I never thought it would be possible for worse paint than my Subaru.

I average about 2 chips per month.

Consumer Reports car reviews are not aimed at car enthusiasts; they are aimed at average consumers who are mainly concerned with comfort, reliability, and safety. Given that, their reviews are pretty good.

Apparently the european-made Foci are very reliable and well-regarded. The design is great but the quality control in the US plants sux.

my sti is the second wrx i've had, my third subaru in three years. My wife's legacy OB is a 2000. Only one paint chip on all three cars, and that's with salted/sanded New Hampshire roads. They must be using that extra-chunky style road salt mix where you live.

I also figured out that if I increase my following distance from the car in front of me by one car length, I can reduce paint damage quite a bit.

The US Focus isn't made in the US. It's assembled in Mexico, hence the QC issues.

Very true.

Enthusiasts should not be reading Consumer Reports for their information.

Consumer Reports is for the type of buyer of _any_ product who does not have an actual interest in the product line (audio, video, refrigerators, autos, whatever) but is one who likes either to be an educated consumer and/or is stuck on deciding between several options.
Its a good source of information for the above scenario and buyer.
Theyr are not though especially good at reviewing anything whether it be A/V equipment, automobiles or washing machines. Commonly they miss things or under report what good and over report the bad that at times has no real bearing on the potential buyer experience. Hence the law suits most notably from Mitsubishi & Suzuki.

We 'car guys', 'tuner boys' and 'automotive sluts' have much better and more reliable/pertinent sources of information whether it be performance or pricing information.
