Default The pulley debacle

First question.....how many different pulley sets are there?

I know there's UR, N1, & GFB. Are there any others I'm unaware of?

Next question, which kits have underdriven pulleys, and which pulleys are underdriven?

The reason I'm asking is that I currently have an UR underdriven pulley. I have replaced my stock alternator with a HO one. It uses an auto turn based on RPM speed. What's happening is that due to the underdriven crank pulley, at low rpms, the alternator is actually not on, and not producing power. My calcs are based at 500 rpm, which is an extreme, but I would like a safety margine.

In all honesty, I would actually like a stock sized crank pulley with an underdriven alternator pulley. Whether I get a PS pulley is arbitrary IMO. The million dollar question is can I get the pulley size combo I want without buying two kits?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Josh

forgot about the mr. josh pullies.

I do know UR does make a stock sized pulley.....but I'm not sure if the full kit they sell has stock sized crank/alt pullies.

Guess it's time to email vendors.

Perrin and Mr Josh are not the only ones.

The N1 stock sized pulleys were taken over by the manufacturer (ISO certified machine shop here in Colo Springs) and the distributor is now ProECM in Colo Springs - with a couple of retailers, subaruplanet.com (me) and airborne motorsports.

They come with Alt, PS and Crank pulleys that drop about 5lbs from the stock set, and a set of stock sized gates belts free. These are very good quality and come in black, silver, blue and red.

[edit - PS not PC]

So the N1 kit has all stock sized pullies, including the alternator?

What I really want is an underdriven alternator pulley and stock sized crank pulley.

Is there any chance you could take some measurements for me? I would like to know the circumference of the pullies where the belt rides. This can pretty easily be found by taking a skinny piece of paper, tightly wrapping it around the pulley, and then marking and measuring the line. If you think you could do this for the alternator & crank pullies I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Josh

ProECm has the pulleys accross town - I would have to ask them to measure, but they ARE all three stock size pulleys. The weight loss is 85% of the gains, and the crank pulley drops from 5.75lbs to 1.75lbs (I don't know the weight of the lighter cross drilled model) - the whole set is under 3lbs!

I don't know of anyone who makes a smaller underdrive alt pully to over spin the alt shaft.

Thanks for the info. The GFB pulley set has a smaller diameter alternator pulley to compensate for the decrease in alternator speed from the under driven crank pulley.

I want to do some more checking, but it looks like I'll probably have to buy to kits to make everything work the way I want it to....we'll see.

We can sell you a Crank and PS without the Alt pulley, if you can GFB to sell you the smaller alt pulley by itself. Email me.

just a side note the perrin isn't quite exactly stock size. it is 97% of the stock size making it slightly underdriven. but in reallity you won't see any difference. i'm running it with two amps (40+40 amps at peak) with no problems.

These would be the N1 pullies, correct? I'll try and see about getting just the alternator pulley, and will be in touch.

Thanks

Josh
