Someone help - air filter question

I was going to buy a new stock air filter today for my 02 TS. (I have an AMS but want to be stock again for my next big service).

Anyways, when I took out my original one last year it was red and oily, and quite a solid piece of kit. The one the guy at the dealer tried to sell me was just plain paper and flimsy - no oil.

It wasn't 'genuine Subaru' but rather the 'six star' brand. Is that the cheaper version or something? It was made in Canada and seemed quite crappy.

Did they change design or what? I didn't buy it and the guy didn't buy my story about my original one. What gives? Anyone?

Hmmm.

Haven't seen that one yet. I prefer the oiled filters like K&N and Amsoil myself, but I wasn't going to put on in till my stock one dies. you got the reverse situation.
