Question MY98 owners - what intake/exhaust do you have?

OK, I'm still plugging away at my research for the MY98 RS and figure this is the best place to start gathering specific info.

The '98s have a MAS (IIRC), so aftermarket electronics aren't needed, correct? What CAIs or mods do you all have on the car? Please be specific in listing the make and model of the CAI, any differences it's made, and definitely any problems you've had.

Do the '98s have two air boxes? If we do and you've installed the drop-in gasket (the plastic frame w/o screen), please post what differences it's made and any problems you've had (if any).

And lastly, what exaust are you using? Again, post any differences in performance and any problems you've had. What is best to upgrade first, the intake or the exhaust?

Thanks for your help! More questions to come...

-Chris

MY98 RBP with STI exhaust. Excellent sound (no droning) and good flow.

Rallispec intake due in 1.5 weeks.

I got rid of the airbox and installed an MAF adapter and cone filter. It sounds nice and deep at WOT and like a vacuum cleaner at idle. Pretty sure I gained some power. I also had a custom 2.25 cat-back installed with a Dynomax muffler(couldn't make myself pay $300 for a muffler). Borla header is on the way now. And I also have a UOR pulley. The best mod I made though was a 22mm sway bar. By far the most fun addition so far. Hope the info helps.

I forgot, I did the cone filter thing after first trying a K&N drop in. I didn't feel any difference with the K&N.

-'97 Legacy intake tube w/ stock air filter box and Amsoil panel filter. Have to feed a bit more throttle off idle because it delete the pigtail and the black chamber immediately before the throttle body,(the 2.5" exhaust might have something to do with it also). Excellent throttle response. Sounds and look factory stock.

-Tanabe Hyper Medallion 2.5" catback. Nice sound, w/ an off throttle burble.

The only thing I would do different is to get a system with 2" - 2.25" exhaust pipes.

when i had my98..i was honestly too lazy to do an induction kit..so i just pulled an airfilter and left it alone other than that.snorkus and all remained..
the exhuast..well..if you feel like shelling 600 for a muffler with no piping i can hook you up with a company that does custom rally exhaust... sounded SWEEET, just beyond the legal limit..with a silencer
Anyhow..enjoy them DOHC ej25's.

still workin' on it. k&n filter and that's about it... I'm empting the cookie jar on a paint job first ('cause of a nice little chevy truck that hit me and split). Hopefully after that I can get something going... well, ummm... suspension, exhaust, suspension, intake, 99+ bumper... yeah, well it'll get there eventually.

Thumbs up

Weapon R intake is one of the best IMHO, very loud, but only when you want it to be, if you caress the pedal its quiet, if you stop the pedal it roars. Its perfect for the 98 because our air flow sensor is one of the stronger ones produced. So there's no worries about it breaking.

Question

Can someone tell me whether the '98 RS has 2 airfilters or not?

And what is a MAF adapter and why do we need one? Isn't the sensor OK, as Stu stated?

Thanks,
-Chris

98's only have 1 filter. The box that sits right behind the throttle body is just an empty box. I think it makes the intake quieter and also holds some air to help with low rpm acceleration. The MAF adapter I was talking about is just a coupling that lets you remove the air box and bolt a cone filter to the MAF tubing.

The Turn3 intake I have on MY99 is designed for MY98 and earlier. It's a 4.5" opening K&N cone filter with a Stillen adapter and a heat shield. Very nice setup, but it doesn't fit the MY99 I have perfectly. Anyone here interested in it?

yeah you read that right..i ran with no airfilter for a little while..just a peice of filter from a airconditioner you know..the blue foamie filter stuff..cut it to fit, threw it on, worked OK, not great..so i just put a K & N flat panel in and kept it that way.

I am running a custom piped 2.25" eliminated farthest cat and res. using a dynomax turbo muffler for the small cost of 125 plus muffler which was 30 woohoo saved what like 400 from stainless straight through mufflers kits that actually would have hurt more than gained. Speak of gained I am thinking of running a larry gainz kit but my concern is that cold air pipe work running and getting water sucked by those huge puddles Impreza owners can't resist I donnu how far it goes down though.....anyone?

PS...98s R fastR

Turn3 R&D Cold-Air Intake Kit with MRT Performance Secondary Bonnet Scoop (http://www.mrtrally.com.au/). Stock exhaust. Great performance and sound. Make sure to seal around the edges of the secondary scoop or water will drip through the cracks directly onto the filter when it rains. No water gets sucked in when moving, even when pouring.

Here is the secondary scoop (replaces passenger side hood vent):

And the intake:

The remains of the silencer (the two empty tubes sticking out of the fender into the engine bay) have been removed and sealed over with metal heating tape to seal up the cold air box as much as possible.

Default Re: MY98 owners - what intake/exhaust do you have?

OK, regarding water. If you open up your hood vents water will drip in. Opening up the vents also sucks air AWAY from the intake. Bad. Adding the secondary bonnet scoop, however, pushes more air into the intake. Yay!

No, the 98s do not have two air boxes. The box towards the throttle body is just a baffle to keep the noise down and the torque up. Removing the baffle will decrease low end torque while adding high end horsepower. This is tuning. Sacrificing the low to get the high.

A complete list of mods for my MY98 can be found at:

http://www.trunkmonkeyracing.com/v00...rprofiles.html

A complete list of mods for WAC's (Wayne's) MY97 can be found at:

http://wac.addr.com/auto/obs/obs.html

Sure, we drive the Impreza 2.2 OBS but most of the mods are compatible. With the exception that we've upgraded to 2.5 RS brakes (which you already have). Duh.

Fear the Trunkmonkey. There is no cone.

Here we go. On my MY98 Brilliant Red RS coupe, I have done the following.

CAI: Modified JC Sports Intake. Used parts from Larry Ganz and a PRM filter to create CAI with the MAF adapter. Pictures of the install and final product can be found HERE This added an awesome sound to WOT. As for HP increase and the like, it's hard to say, but things seemed to breath easier, and it just opened up the boxer sound some more.

Exhaust: Recently put the Brullen header back system on the car. Dual 3.5" tips fill the whole in the rear bumper and it has 2.25" piping, pretty much the limit of NA cars. It came with a high flow cat as well. It sounds great and there is a definite difference in the way the car pulls and sounds. I love the system so far, and the MY98 electronics haven't had a single problem with the new system at all. That's what I love about it so far. It's not picky about things, and adapts to changes really well.

I believe I have the most developed supercharged Impreza in the United States. It has an Eaton m62 pushing twelve lbs through a front mount intercooler and reads down to 39 degrees intake charge temp (N.Idaho winter). The exhaust is three inch from the heads to the black tip. Needless to say it has a full street/strip built engine, is extensivly ported, and sports a dogbox trans. It is a hairy hairy beast., to say the least. I am a very lucky individual.

Almost 100 pics at www.printroom.com under the album name "breathless"

Just want to add that the hesitation that I [most DOHC] originally had at 3600-4000 rpms is gone and the car pulls strong to redline. It could be a combination of the filter and the intake but I never removed one or the other to verify. I have also installed an UR pulley and a quicker spool-up is definately noticable. If you want to look stock get a K&N or Amsoil type filter at the very least.

Future plans include a "cleaned-up" and balanced oe flywheel with the CM Stage 3 clutch kit that I have sitting in the garage since last fall, the warranty replacement has less than 15k miles on it and is still holding.

If the STI is more than $32K TOTAL out the door I [might] have keep my '98 and will probably install the centrifugal SC that Templar will soon release. I personally have stayed away from a turbo because I wanted a system that I can easily remove for smog inspections.
