Post Minor muffler humorous moments....

I'm leaving the store after picking up my PIAA SuperWhites, and start the car. I've gotten so accustomed to the sound of my Stromung that I didn't realize until later what he was reacting to. Got a thumbs up, but I think he was surprised that I'd been modding the "utilitarian" Legacy wagon.

Later, I'm going home, and hear this rather odd buzzing sound, which I realize as it pulls up behind me is a Civic with a big ol' pipe. They were blipping the throttle, apparently getting off on the exhaust sound.

Well, the light turns green, and I just do a casual pull away, but the Stromung sounds great, of course. At the next light, I got the big check-out.

Chicago seems to be chockablock with lads running mufflers that have tips sufficient to house small mammals, but I have yet to hear one that sounds good. Why is this? Is it that the boxer engine has its own deep tone that a performance muffler just brings out?

Kevin

You can't polish a turd. All the muffler in the world won't fix a Honda. The boxer sounds like that because it really does sound like that.

It is the flat four. You would have to try hard to give a Subaru that annoying inline4 "blat".

That's why I always tell people to buy a cheap low restriction muffler, because just about *anything* will sound good on a scooby. (no offense to those that dropped major bux on a scoobysport, etc.)

Can someone tell me why our cars don't sound like volkswagons much? Aside from it really being a different car, I've never heard a suby with that ".22 pistol" noise that a modded bug makes. I know longer exhaust tubing has something to do with it. But, I've only heard one VW that had a v8 idle with an indycar windup like ours. It whipped my sube's butt, too.

Not all inline 4's sound like Hondas. My Saab sounds pretty sweet.

Not as sweet as my WRX will when it comes...

I've often wondered why our cars don't sound like VW's either.. Anyone know??
It might be because of the size of the engine

Interestignly enough its in part due to the water jacket on the motor. it does wonders for muffling the intitial pulse.

also it could be that the unequal length exaust ports have something to do with it.

Last but not least the exaust opening is on the other end of the car from the motor. the long pipe kills alot of the "crack" sound as the supersonic exaust flow makes past the valves as they open.

I find it not fair that the ppl outside get to hear the boxer 4's growl more clearly than the driver - me! Now that it's winter, the window's all up and I can't the genuince roar of my exhaust. Sometimes I get tempted to just let someone drive my car around in a parking lot so that I can hear it from the outside for once!
