Default What's the REAL weight of the Rota SDR?

I am seriously looking into a set of 17"x7.5" Rota SDRs. After searching the internet, and this forum, I have found a number of weights (ranging from 16.3-18lbs) for this wheel. I have read that color specifies weight for this wheel, so to clarify, I'm looking for the Steel Gray ones. If anyone has some first-hand info, I'd love to hear it. Thanks.

Ian

P.S. Pics on a WRB wagon?

I have a set and would say it is closer to the 17-18lbs. They are noticably heavier than my Volk TE37s (15lbs) and the Volks have .5" more width on them.

My gold SDRs were ~18 lbs. if that helps at all.

Thanks for the info, but I was hoping for a more exact weight. Is there anyone out there that has put one on a scale lately?

wgknestrik--I would definately have those TE37s if I could afford them!

PM Subydude. He sells them and he should know the exact weight. I have them on my wagon in Steal Gray but I have a black wag.

I asked Suby Dude this same question. He said, the darker the wheel the heavier it is. Specifically I asked him about the weight of the bronze SDR and he said they were ~18.3 lbs. Silver has gotta be the lightest of the options.

Why should the color have anything to do with the weight? Just wondering?

SDscooby--18.3lbs?! Holy crap, that's a lot! If true, I need to find a lighter wheel for the money!

Zoso--don't know why color matters. I guess the amount of paint needed for a darker wheel is more than a lighter wheel. That's all I can figure.

IMO, 18-ish pounds isn't bad at all for a cast 17"x7.5" wheel. It's actually rather light. Strength/weight/price, somethings gotta give.

i think they weigh the same amount as the New Tarmac2.

The tarmac2 looks really sweat and not cheap like the original tarmacs.

I was about to post the exact same question

Rota wheel spokesman, you got the exact weight? Sounds silly that the wheel color makes a difference, can you confirm this too. I want steel gray .

Thank you so much for all the replies--especially from ROTA! It's good to know there's a place like NASIOC that has all the answers!

Default By george, you're right!

Sport Compact Car does show the SDR weighing in at 17.8lbs. As much as I trust SCC, I can't help but think that the spokesperson for Rota would have the wrong weight, would they? Plus, if you look at other wheels in that catagory of the SCC article, you'll notice they only list one weight for a wheel that comes in a number of sizes. Maybe they take the weight of the smalest size? Who knows, but I would still suspect Rota to be correct on their weight.

Default umm....

nevermind the part of that last post about wheel sizes. I need to look more closely. That past of the article did pertain only to 17" wheels. Sorry! I would still stand by Rota though.

I would stand by Rota too. Just thought I'd inform on the contradictory info, though. There's also a part of me that wants my wheels to weigh 17.8lbs/ea instead of 18.7lbs/ea, but now I'm just being anal.

i've measured a few of them... and they all average out to approx 18.3.

remember folks... color of wheels can also give +/- tenths of a lbs.

I think you've captured it pretty well. The new 17x8.5 SSR Competitions should be really nice at 14-15lbs. But they're also going to cost something like $1600 per set. The Advan TCII's ought to be very lightweight as well, but they're even more. The Fikse Profil 10 goes for strength (it is a real racing wheel, with custom offsets) -- about 18 lbs and $3200 a set. After that, the Rota SDRs at $650 a set look mighty attractive. Enough so that I'll be buying a set for track tires (and a set of the SSRs for autocross). Much as I want the Fikse wheels, I just can't justify the price.
