The WRX is $25,000 and it doesn't have a sunroof. That sucks. Heck the Outback gets 2!!

They decrease chassis regidity and also decreases headroom. The loss is no skin off my nose at all. If you want, you can always get one installed aftermarket. I have seen a few installed in Outback Sports.

I for one am glad that when MY02 WRX is ready for me to pick up, there will be no sun roof.
REduces chassis riggidity, and makes the car slightly heavier. |

I wonder how much of the 250% improved chassis rigidity came from losing the sunroof... hmmm....

Not a biggy to me either. If I want some open sky over my head I'll just drop the top on my Miata.

Yeah, I was pretty pleased to see that it doesn't have a sunroof. Hopefully if they decide to add one, it'll be an option instead of standard. I've never been able to own an RS 'cause I just don't fit into one - not enough headroom. So I have a wagon. Well, that and I needed the utility....

Its funny, I never even gave it a second thought. When I had a Jetta with a sunroof, I really loved it. The SVX and Porsche both have sunroofs and its very nice. But I don't think its going to turn people away from the WRX- the performance is too impressive for it to matter.

I would bet that a sunroof would add almost 100 lbs to the car.

Shudder...
The one thing and I mean the one thing I truely detest about my RS is the G@# D@#$ Sunroof. WRX's around the planet are not forced to endure such Fluff. For what else is it, in a car made for racing, why were we forced to have a stupid sunroof... It's simple the whole automotive industry knows that most americans have no clue about what makes a good sports car. We have people bitching about the quality of the carpet in the trunk for crying out loud... Yet good carpet weighs a ton... If someone wants a fluff sports car go buy a acura or a lexus.. Just please keep your power windows and upgraded stereo and extra sound deadening out of the few cars remaining that don't weigh as much as a house and can actually get out of their own weigh. Please SOA don't be a leming and jump off the stupid cliff cause all the other car makers in the world think Americans are idiots... Sorry about the rant.. but as you can tell I hate my sunroof and I may have to by an L and do some transplanting to keep me from going insane. Later Eric |

I don't think the sunroof adds 100lbs Rao.
The headroom isn't decreased that much since the panel slides out of the car instead of between the headliner & roof assembly. The systems that do that lose much more headroom than our cars. Good thing I'm not like 6'4"... ![]() Personally, I wish SOA would bring the STi Type RA over here but that'll happen when poop don't stink... -myk [This message has been edited by mykrrrr (edited January 12, 2001).] |

I too am glad that it doesn't have a sunroof.. it's not about losing headroom, or less rigidity (though that is a good point) it's sunburn. As everyone knows, we have very intense sunlight here in Sydney, and I in particular do not like getting burnt. I have tinted windows all around, and the sunroof on my Civic only gets opened at night.. and only if it's a cool night. Those who want a hole in the roof can go cut one themselves... hehehe

I wish it also didn't come with AC, or side airbags, ditch that dead weight.
It already comes with a 260 AC. ****, thats All I ever need, two windows rolled down at 60 MPH. |

I wish my RS didn't have a sunroof, it would be lighter and stiffer.

Maybe someone should look into making a "Sun-Roof Removal Kit" for the RS. Get rid of all the panels and motors and just put in a carbon fiber piece to replace the missing parts. Might take 50lbs off the car!

Well, as a previous RS owner, a current 2000 Legacy GT sedan owner, and a most definite future WRX owner, I must say the beautiful moonroof/sunroof in my Legacy has gotten used about twice since I've owned the car. I always used to think...Ooooh it's nice to have one if I need it. The point is, I DON'T need it. If it's open, the sun always shines in your eyes, detracting from your driving, if you accidentally leave it open, it seeems to "suck" dust and leaves and bugs in. NO THANKS...GOOD MOVE SUBARU. NOW TAKE OUT THE DARN A/C TOO!! C'mon we're tryin' to build a race car here! Actually, I NEVER use my A/C, so I'm gonna try and find a way to take it out of my WRX.

I'm sure taking out the A/C is not that difficult.
And I'm also glad we got the Recaro style seats instead of the side airbags..YAY!! |

I am pleased there is no sun/moon roof in the new WRX. A roof is lighter, cheaper, and stiffer; provides maximum headroom; and cannot malfunction mechanically when it doesn't have a sun/moon roof. The center of a roof (without sun/moon roof) is the optimum location for communications antennas.
To "add lightness" to the WRX, one can easily remove the AC compressor/ducts, carpeting, sound-deadening materials, rear seats, and even air bags. But one can't easily remove a sun/moon roof. |

Seriously, why can't subaru just make a streetable, pure race car? Let's ditch the A/C, power windows, and radio. Oh and the side airbags!
I'm sure there would be a huge market in the US for an uncomfortable, unsafe race car. mbs |

Hey, whenever I'm driving in our 2000 Legacy GT Limited, the Sunroof is open! My dad is the only one who closes it... I wear a hat all the time anyway, so the sun doesnt bother me.
Plus, for some reason the Legacys are VERY loud when the windows are open (and I drive cars with windows open all the time, exept in rain + very cold weather, which is only like 15% of the time) so I open the sunroof instead... Its much quiter, and fresh air kicks ass. Anyway, Sunroofs are good when you want luxury/option stuff... Not for a car like the WRX/RS though (Thats why I'm waiting for the 2002 RS) |

The new WRX doesn't have a sunroof due to improvements in the body structure. Mike Whelan went into some depth regarding what was actually done. The new car is much more rigid than the previous body style. Mike stated that most journalists that have driven the car have commented on this, and liked how it has improved handling and stability.
Oh yeah, there's a new support beam that runs from B pillar to B pillar, so no sunroof. Big deal. Steve http://www.lagging.com/ |
