Default Turbo tune up for 98 Impreza with EJ22

Hello there, I'm totally new to be here, and first word I wanna say is how you guys doing!! I think some of you guys are professional worker for cars. So let me ask you a question. Is it possible to install turbo to EJ22?? My impreza is 98 AWD sportwagon with EJ22. But I feel a big lack of power. I didn't have an enough money to buy newer impreza with turbo. Now I got $3000 to tune it up. I want a turbo and intercooler. If somebody know how, what kinds of turbo can be installed to my impreza, please tell me!!! Thanks for reading.

Kazu,
For $3000 you are going to be hard pressed to build your own "kit" and there isn't a single kit on the market that I know of that can be had for less than $4000. And most kits assume you have already addressed certain things like having a big enough exhaust. Do some searching around the site( the aftermarket turbo forum is the appropriate forum for this thread, BTW) and you'll find some set ups. There are some ghetto turbos running around here, but I discourage doing that unless you can afford to replace a blown engine when the mickey mouse engine management goes bad...

You're better off getting a WRX engine swap. You'll have to save more money for that though, as you'll need exhaust and other necessities in order to pull off the conversion. You should check with the guys at i-Speed. They're the big conversion guys in the Bay Area and they do EXCELLENT work.

Thanks for your early reply! I asked the same question to stuffs from I-speedUSA, then they said that I can buy a used Ludespeed stage III for about 3k or an AVO kit. So if somebody knows something about those stuffs, plez let me know. Well I also look for another way to pull up power of my car.... Tell me any ideas, that can make my car stronger, if you know. I really feel a lack of power on my car....

I feel your lack of power, but if you're going to do it, you might as well do it right in the first place. I'd second looking for a used turbo kit, but you might have a lot of custom fabrication if that kit was meant to be used on an EJ25. Just food for thought.

before we go any further down this path, let us know how much of the wrenching/tuning you will do yourself. Labor is often half the price, and depending on your skills as a mechanic, I can offer some ideas...

True. Labor for this job is going to be the most costly part of the upgrade. How skilled a wrench are you?
