Default igonorant about the imprezza.

I bought a 98 imprezza a few weeks ago and when its starts cold the enigine makes a weird ticking noise until the car warms up. It seems to get worse as the weather has been getting colder. I have owned 6 or so VW's over the last 11 years and never had one that made a noise like this unless a rocker started to go bad. But that never went away. I know nothing of the quirks of a Subaru, but everyone of my VW's had it's own weird quirk that wasn't detrimental and there was nothing I could do about it. Can anyone tell me if this is a quirk or something to be worried about. I no practiacaly nothing about the imprezza engine yet.

Thanks

change your oil to 10-40, and it is a normal thing, its the piston slap. mine does it too... the oil will help, but it wont fully go away, if it stays bad then your pistons are worn a bit and a short block is your best bet.

u have a ej25 DOHC model, the 98 was the only year of this, 99 and on uses a sohc motor, they dont make as many noises, but they can under certain conditions.

known issues with the dohc model are blown head gaskets, and cracked cylinders.i havent had a prob with mine, but others have... i bought my car with 89k, it now has 107, still runs good

This is a normal characteristic of Subaru engines. My '97 Forester "ticked" when the engine was cold until it warmed up, especially in cold weather. My '02 2.5 RS does it too. It never caused any problems.

Switching to synthetic may help a bit, but it's pretty much an unfixable flaw as far as I know.

Is it piston slap, or noisy hydraulic lifters?
either way, a 10w-40 will help, and try a quart of Rislone next oil change in place of a quart of oil.

you can look at the engine block right below the alternator and it will say EJ18 (1.8L) or EJ22 (2.2L)...

only one "Z" in Impreza. That should get you started.

Your 98L has a 2.2l.

The pistons in the EJ engines are skirtless or near-skirtless depending on the year. This reduces friction but makes them knock until the car warms up. This is no problem really, the car will run for a 100k like that. Sometimes the cam belt tensioner makes a knock too, but that usually keeps knocking when warm.
