Question Why I hate my car some days.

I am the owner of a '97 OBS, 2.2L, 75K. Over the last few months my car has developed this annoying little habit. It itermitently stops accelerating between 2000 and 2500rpms. A little chugging, some low pitched growl but no acceleration. Some days my car runs like a champ. Others it does this and its really beginning to piss me off. Sometimes its not very bad and goes away, soemtimes it gets worse. Its really annoying on the highway because if i let the engine get below 2500 i HAVE to downshift in to 4th otherwise I slow down, to the point where i cant even acclerate going downhill. other days when its running good, i can accerlerate through that whole range no problem. I have not once gotten a check engine light. I did have a leak in my intake after reinstalling it, (everything is stock accept a k&n panel filter). The rubber intake tube had gotten pinched and was leaking. That I fixed long ago. I thought this might be weather realted as it seemed to hapen more when it rained. but Lately its been really random. Has anyone else had any problems like this?
Some suggested it might be my O2 sensor gasping its last. I added some ground wires but they didnt fix it. I am going to go talk to a mechanic today, but the car is not doing it this
morning Any suggestions or anything would be much apprecaited, I really like my car and would like to get this resolved

just to add....a few times it has started doing this and pissed me off, so i would then start shifting at 5K and then after a minute or two cool down and realize that it had stopped doing it...***...I normally drive with the engine between 2 and 3 grand.

if it's happening when it's raining, it's likely to be your plug wires or maybe your coil pack. Does it do this when not under load? can you replicated it when parked? I had a similar problem, not as bad as you've stated, and when I looked under the hood, I could see a plug wire arcing. When is the last time a basic tune up was performed on your car? Plugs, fuel filter, cleaning your air filter, etc.

i have had the car since the beginning of the summer, about 12,000 miles. I had t-belt, waterpump, plugs and wires done, replaced, fuel filter, pcv(?) valve, all soon after i got the car. It only really does it while driving. Sometimes If i rev the engine I can notice a little roghness, but not the sluggishness i get while driving. It has done this on sunny days too lately, so i dont think its caused by rain.

To pinpoint a high voltage problem, try looking around under the hood, engine running, in the dark - might see some arcing. Or try spraying one side of the engine with a water bottle, drive around, then try the other side to promote the problem. This could however be several things, TPS, cat going bad, lots of stuff.
good luck and get back to us on what you find please.

Thanks for the replys. The mechanic said the dreaded..it could be many things, bring it in and I will look at it...::shudder::..why does that sound expensive. But, it will be nice to have my car running well again. So im gonna bring it in next week and see what he can do for me. I will post up whatever he fins.

Thanks all,
Jeremy

Like folks say here, it could be a host of things. For some reason, I keep thinking you have a vacuum leak somewhere. During low throttle application, perhaps a vacuum hose is leaking just enough so that when you apply the throttle, fuel keeps being dumped into the engine while the air escapes. Other times, the vacuum line could be holding on just enough not to let the extra air out of the intake so the air and fuel mixes right. I dunno, just a guess. Good luck!

I have a feeling it may be related to your timing belt tensioner and or idler pulleys. If that tensioner was compressed incorrectly or installed incorrectly it could cause problems with valve timing on occasion.

That's my only guess for now.

so...months later. During the winter the problem pretty much went away. The car would never replicate the problem for the mechanic last fall so I never did anything. This spring it started acting up again and I took it in. My mechanic this time was able to get the engine to cut out by spraying water on the coil pack...replcaed the plugs and wires and it ran fine. That was in march. Since then it have run finr most of the time and occasionally will act up a little. The past few weeks it has started doing the same thing...not very severe..but its there. Could it be the coil pack? Any other ideas?
