Default Anyone live in Laramie or surrounding areas?

Hey I was wondering if anyone here lives in Laramie? I will be attending WyoTech in January. What Cell Phone companies are good around there? Is there anything to do in Laramie? Does anyone here go to wyotech?

I'm looking to going to WYOTECH when my military enlistment is up in about 9 months. I currently live in Cheyenne, about 40 min away from Laramie. I use T-Mobile and my wife has Verizon. Nice area.

Don't get caught speeding in Laramie with out of state plates. It happened to me around midnight one Friday night on my way to Vedavou (sp?). He told me," our states don't communicate, so you need to pay this right now, boy" He escorted my to the local 7-11. Then I had to buy something to break the 20 from the ATM to get exact change. Then he escorted me to the county jail where I paid $68 cash to a bail clerk and got my reciept. 72 in a 65 and all that crap in the middle of the night. And he was talking trash about the wyotech kids and their suped up cars every time I got out of the car to do something. That was the first thing he asked me, not if I knew how fast I was going, but did I go to Wyotech...

Laramie is a nice a town (went to UW). If you like to do things outdoors it's a great area. Good camping, fishing, hiking, climbing, mountain biking, etc. all within an hrs. drive. If you like city life, well skip WY altogether. But Denver is about 2.5 hrs. drive away.

As for the cops not liking techers, there's many a reason. For example, techers were the main customers when there was a prostitution ring running out of the JR. HIGH. This happened twice. Or minor things, like tanning cow hides in the dorms, thinking it's a good idea to start a fight with a cop (in said fight trying to rip off the cops ear), etc.

I've met/known a few good guys who went to wyotech, but I've seen at least triple that amount who weren't.

I still had my Cali plates at the time...The other thing is this was on 287 right outside of town. It was a Laramie sherriff and not the Highway Patrol. How they handle things might be different...

And that's some messed up stuff those kids were up to...

Regarding the speeding, they sit and clock people all the time on 287 just south of town. Also coming north into town, where 287 becomes 3rd, where the speed limit goes from 40 to 30, they'll sit on the other side of the overpass right where the speed limit changes.

Funny story....
My dad got a ticket there. We were coming back from dinner from the Cavalryman. I told him to slow down as they always clock people on that road. He ignored me. Rolled into town doing about 45. Cop pulls him over. Writes him a ticket. I'm sitting in the backseat with my sister trying my best not to bust out laughing at him

Hey guys, I'm new to the board. I'll be attending Wyotech starting Jan 05. I'm in the management program, then I start up with the auto. program, and then finish up with the high performance and then custom fabrication classes. What time are you guys going to get into laramie before class starts? I'm probably going to show up on the 3'rd.

Hey... I'm going to Wyotech right now.

Laramie sucks, even compared to Wisconsin

So does the management program, but there's plenty of time to have fun. I'd highly suggest taking night classes, unless your over 21 and want to go to the bars.

Wyotech housing also isn't the greatest. Off campus housing is the way to go...theres a lot of party trailers.

Pretty much everything about Wyotech sucks except the actual learning about cars part. But I'd still say it's worth it. I'm having fun most of the time.

I don't doubt laramie sucks, what is there to do in the area other than drink heavily?
(<-- doesn't drink)

Any good twisty roads to flog a good suspension on? What's so bad about the schools housing? A guy I know went to wyotech for a few months and decided he didn't want to work on cars for a living. He also said he left because he was having stuff ripped off all the time. Was he just un-lucky to get his stuff stolen? or is that actually a problem? As long as I have a good net connection and a bed to sleep in I'm pretty happy living pretty much anywhere. How is the broadband in laramie?

There's definitely a lot of fun roads to drive on. Just ten minutes away from my 'housing' there's a road with some of the most difficult and dangerous turns I've ever seen, and after a few miles it turns into a wide gravel road with plenty of room to play around.

Not really a lot to do besides drink, unless you're into camping and fishing and outdoor stuff like that. Or if you're lucky you might find some UW chicks to party with, but they tend to hate techers i guess.

That's weird about your friend who left Wyotech. Was his name Alex? Did he get a bunch of speakers and car audio stuff stolen? You described this kid I hung out with exactly.

I don't have broadband yet... I don't know if it's really worth the trouble since I'm only there for a year. But I looked for it for hours online and found maybe one or two DSL companies with service in Laramie. It's not easy to find.

Hooray for the good roads! I'll have to pull some good USGS 1m maps (I have a real estate liscense and know how to come up with these things) and we might have to do some late night road ralley competetions with a co-drive calling turns. Have you been to any auto-x events, perusing the 'net it looks like there are some pretty frequent SCCA solo-2 events that happen. If it's really that totally boring, boulder/ft. colins aren't too much of a hideous drive.

The guy I know who left Wyotech was named Ramsey and he was there like 3 years ago so I doubt you know him, but he had alot of car audio stuff ripped off repeatedly.

I am going to be there for ~18 months, so it's probably worth looking into good broadband for me.

It turns out I have a cousin that goes to UW, so I could probably find a way to get myself invited to a few UW parties if worse comes to worse.

Ever hear of Matthew Shepherd?

I dunno, there will always be in-tolerant a$$holes wherever you go, especially in heavily republican states like WY. But I'm still eager to hear the opinions of people who are there now. And there haven't been many good answers to what there is to do that doesn't involve drinking.....

*starts to get worried about a lack of stuff to do*

oh well, at least boulder is a close enough drive to hang out in on weekends if things are really that bad.
